355ml can - day 23 of the 2018 Parallel 49/Red Racer Alpine Adventure Pack. An 'Oat Kottbusser' - from what I've read about this heretofore abandoned style is that it is a cleaner version of a Hefe, so hence my choice here.
This beer pours a clear, bright pale golden yellow colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly bone-white head, which leaves some spotty islet lace around the glass as it quickly dissipates.
It smells of bready and doughy cereal malt, some estery yeastiness, oatmeal, subtle paint thinner, and very tame earthy, musty, and dead floral hop bitters. The taste is grainy and bready pale malt, raw oats, honeyed crackers, and more understated leafy, herbal, and lightly perfumed floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is average in its palate-satisfying frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and sort of smooth, with a weird clamminess pretty much there from the get-go. It finishes off-dry, the various graininess showing the most lingering brio.
Overall - yeah, there's just something that doesn't sit well for me here. The malt-forward nature is fine, but there is some kind of phenolic astringency nature burbling just under the surface, and it makes this a bit of a chore to drink.
