800 Beers!
A- This pours with a dark brown, almost black color, and if I was guessing, it is rather clear. The head is tan/light caramel in color, is fairly dense initially, and has a soapy character to it....it dissipates quickly into a thick film over the brew....nothing special here. The lacing is quite nice to look at, being stickily clingy around the inside of the glass, creating a piece of artwork in the process. Overall it looks like a typical stout style beer.
S- I get strong initial aromas of coffee and vanilla nuances in the background, alongside mild aromas of dark chocolate, cafe au lait, black and chocolate malt dryness/astringency, Earthy root, and/or damp soil, with a finish that is dry, slightly hopped bitterness....easy going on the nostrils!
T- The flavors follow suit to the aforementioned aromas rather well, with black coffee, mocha chocolate, hints of vanilla bean in the background, robust yeasty biscuit/bread, finishing with smooth vanilla creme and dry grainy barley kernel....very easy on the palate
M/O- This is a medium-full bodied beer with a relatively smooth carbonation profile. I like that this isn't heavy in alcohol, which really helps make it a quaffable beverage, even in the hot weather! Its sweet enough to be classed as a sweet stout, yet it is more robust than anything. I would suggest this with a sharp cheddar and Lincolnshire/Cumberland sausage platter, as I am of this writing. Was this what I expected to be enjoying on my 800th brew review?.....no, but it is an easy, enjoyable version of the style and I would definitely have it again! Another decent brew from Central City!
