Vecchio Birraio "Stella Cometa"
75 cl brown glass bottle coded "Lotto 36/2024" & "Da consumarsi preferibilimente entro 2026" and sampled on 27 November 2025.
Notes: Brewed with barley, wheat, honey, hops, sugar, spices, and yeast, and refermented in the bottle.
Look: Lightly hazy amber/copper in color beneath a creamy head of light khaki colored foam. Very good head retention and lacing.
Smell: Malty and sweetly bready with a hint of spiciness.
Taste: Sweet, bready, somewhat wheaty, and lightly spicy with nutmeg and what appears to be allspice but really could be any combination of spices as they're kept to a minimum. A firm bitterness backs it and keeps it dry in the finish despite the sugariness of the malt upfront.
Feel: Medium -full in body and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled, natural carbonation (it's bottle conditioned).
Overall: I'm assuming that this is intended as a holiday beer, and I appreciate that if that's the case as they've kept the spices restrained. There's enough spiciness to it that you can smell and taste it, and enjoy it within the overall flavor of the beer, but not so much that it takes control of the beer. It's a little sweet but at the same time it is a strong celebratory beer so that works. Nicely done!
