The brewer says, "This strong rye lager features a slight malt sweetness up front giving way to a crisp dry spiciness provided by the large portion of rye malt used in the mash. Hallertau Hersbrucker hops give the beer a floral and slightly fruity finish."
IBU 50 ABV 8% OG 18° Plato
The above description meshes nicely with my experience. An appealing if subdued aroma is accompanied by a less subtle, well-balanced flavor. This is a unique and tasty beer with a readily perceived rye component. There seems to be a good amount of 'regular' malt in this as well, as I was thinking it tasted like a rye black ale (were there such a thing).
M: medium body; very good carbonation.
O: A pleasant surprise. Among the best rye beers I've had, if a little short of the very best. Another new and fine rye beer, coming out about the same time as the much hoppier and far more easy to obtain SN Ruthless Rye. This beer would actually have broader appeal, I imagine, with its more equally balanced malt/hop ratio.
