I tried this beer as part of a flight at the brewery. It poured an opaque dark with thin tan ring head that did not leave any lace. The scent had bourbon and molasses. The tastes was nicely balanced and easy to drink with roast and sweet malt base with bourbon and coffee highlights. The mouthfeel was fuller in body with smooth carbonation. Overall it is a solid beer.

Coffee.
You have to like coffee stouts.
And I don't drink coffee.
This is apparently supposed to be similar to the Conqueror which is an imperial Oatmeal Stout. When it was presented to me they talked about cocoa and nibs and hints of chocolate.
Everybody needs palate taste different things but all I could taste was coffee in a beer.
Much like my desire to classify peanut butter stout away from milk stouts and away from bourbon barrel aged stouts I also think that coffee stouts should likely fall into their own category.
There are subtle coffee stouts and then there are...BAM...did I just drink a cup of coffee stouts.
This one is the later.
After eating a pork taco it tasted better I think simply because my pallet had been cleansed by something other than coffee.
That said, I can appreciate that this is a decent coffee stout. It's above average. Likely not going to win any awards. But, it's holding its own. People will come in to Barley's and say it's amazing. And, some of them are right because they feel that way.
It didn't do it for me because I'm not into the loud screaming coffee flavors in stouts. A subtle hint, yes. If it tastes like I drank coffee then no.
