Cask version at Barleys 5th Annual Mini RAF (04/28/07): This beer is a murky straw color with a nil white head and very little lacing. The aroma is a cross between an IPA and a Witbier. Hops, citrus and a touch of vanilla in the nose. Light, crisp body with a grassy hops flavor, along with some spice and citrus. The finish is midly hoppy and citrusy. Overall a refreshing and unique beer that blurs the lines of established styles.

Appearance:
Flat out this beer pours like flat PBR from a fresh growler. The beer is clear, light yellow, and yields little head even from a rough pour. Perhaps it's not fair to knock the appearance on this beer because it is brewed with rice which offers no color really so all the color from this beer comes from the specialty grains. Oh well, in essence I'm not impressed especially given their (Barley's) general quality.
Smell:
A step up but still not on par with their other brews. There's a very neutral malt presence which I'm assuming is what rice smells like. Everything here is coming from the hops, with a clean malt scent the hops are really allowed to shine presenting notes of juniper berries, cider, and floral notes.
Taste and Mouthfeel:
The beer drinks really light and crisp with a powdery dryness up front. Again there's an absolutely neutral malt presence which gives way to hops. The hops are a little more piney then floral in the taste but some of the botanical goodness hangs on here. Unlike the appearance of this beer I don't feel it's just to take points away here, the beer takes pretty good. It's definitely not an APA but that's OK.
Drinkability:
If I was a really big brewer I would market this as a something like Sierra Nevada light. This beer has everything a light beer has in terms of drinkability without sacrificing flavor in a major way.
Bottom Line:
Something unique and tasty but not quite as good as Barley's other beers. You have to give them props for the idea though.

A very pale straw/urine color. Somewhat milk in appearance. Head is minimal and white.
Very green aromas, sweet and fruity floral hop gestures. A bit of lemon zest and spicey pine as well.
Not bad. Nicely balanced with a prickly mouthfeel. Herbacious grapefruity middle. Still green in taste. Enough malt to balance the hop and not interfere with the fruityness. Starfruit and lemon come through on the finish.

This beer is the latest offering and experiment of the this brewpub. They became interested in Japanese hops and decided to create a beer using Sorachi Ace hops. This beer poure a clear yellow color and formed a small bubbly white head that left trace lace as it subsided. A small amount of carbonation is present. An aroma of hops, grapfruit and lemon. The flavor was of hops, grapefruit and a touch of butter. The finish was bitter, yet astrigent with a hint of the butter. It feels like a pale ale straddling the lines of an IPA, particularly with it's light color, astigency and hop characteristics. A good, intriguing beer.
