When introduced, this beer tried to do way too much more than it was capable of. It was drinkable, sure, but it wasn't really worth buying.

The brewmaster told me that he's reworked it, and so I gave it another shot.

Nice pour. Sunshiney honey amber with tight white head.

Smells of fairly strong Belgian spice and a very mellow but firm spicy yeast. Whitepepper, cloves, allspice.

Tastes very much like it smells. The spice is firm and backed wonderfully by the yeast, and all this is presented with a pleasnt, light crispness that makes the beer very refreshing and easy to drink.

The new batch is markedly different than the old, less intense and more playful. Well worth trying.

This is a relatively new offering at the brewpub I am just now getting around to reviewing.

The appearance is borderline between a Belgian Dark and a Belgian Pale. I chose the dark when I added it to the database since it is more along the lines of a dark. It has a dark copper color to it with a decent white head and a decent amount of carbonation.

The smell has a bit of a spice to it from the yeasty clove notes. It also seems a bit bready. It reminds me of a Chimay, but not quite as strong.

The taste is also quite similar to the Chimay but since it has a lower alcohol level, no thanks to IA's faulty beer laws, the phenolic flavors and sugars are not quite as highly pronounced. It is quite good for being a sub-6% belgian style, wanna-be dark ale. It is quite light and sessionable, making it a great take-home beer for a belgian lover who wants to drink more than his or her fair share of an abbey style ale without having to worry about the high proof.
