Invented in Einbeck, made popular in Munich, beer lovers have been drinking this distinctive style in one form or another for almost four hundred years. Bock, which means "Goat" in German, is a family of strong generally sweet lagers. A beautifully thick, dark and smooth beer, this is the first beer we experimented with after receiving our microbrewery permit in 1996.

Fairly dark for a bock, brown-copper in hue; a strikingly odd white head is juxtaposed upon the liquid. The bubbles quickly faded to a thin soapy cap and then further diminished to nothing. Not surprisingly there was no subsequent lacing either. Overall, the appearance is nothing very noteworthy.

Odd smelling nose, the main aroma doesn’t really smell like malt (grain) but it doesn’t smell like malt extract either. I do smell slightly rotten fruit. Moderate potency; the nose is quite lousy as there is nothing too it and nothing about it is remotely pleasant. Yuck.

Dry palate upfront, again I can’t call this beer malty. It is vaguely fruity with a caramel twang, empty finish. I can’t say this beer tastes like a Bock. Maybe it is a lager (but I doubt it). Sure, it is fairly clean but, so what; it is far from tasty or even tolerable. The sweet, muddled aftertaste is an unpleasant ending to say the least.

Medium/medium-full in body, moderate carbonation, the mouthfeel is healthy and fitting but, still, it is only average in the grand scheme of things.

Not terribly tasty, actually it is terrible… I somehow (I guess I was being polite) drank my pint. Clearly this beer is not brewed for the beer geeks of the world. Surely these small town yokels know this is poor quality, right? I mean the Hy-Vee in town does sell craft beer. Sad. My low expectations were met; it is not worth of a try.
