Very simple: this is where you go if you want good beer in SW KS. The selection is only limited by the state ABC, they will order anything that is distributed here. Helen sold her entire stock of Boulevard Chocolate for the $7.87 list price while the store up the road was scalping it for over $20. There is something to be said for a retailer who doesn't take advantage of her customers even when fully aware that she could. There isn't a rating for integrity on this review, but people like this are what makes GC special.

If you find yourself in Kansas you'll quickly realize that the wonderful variety of microbrewery products available on the coasts never make it here, and even craft beers on shelves across the borders in Missouri and Colorado aren't distributed here. Recognizing that, it doesn't mean you have to settle for macros or "transition beers."

The Watering Hole is an oasis in the beer desert of southwest Kansas. If the Kansas ABC will let a beer in the state, Helen, the proprieter, will do her best to insure that you can find it here. She has even driven 400 miles (round trip) to pick up special orders when regional distributors have told her they don't want the hassle of trying to get it here...

This past week has seen the arrival of Lindeman lambics including Peche, Frambozen, Kriek There is always a variety of Belgians, Unibroue products, and a some Germans such the Ayinger line. There are a few French and English brews, and Czechvar and Pilsner Urquell are available. Regional selections include New Belgium Brewery, O'Dell, Boulder Brewery, Boulevard Brewery. Seasonals and special releases may arrive on the shelves later than reviewers across the country describe, but you'll probably never see them in elsewhere at any time in this area!

I give the selection a 4.0 --- that's regionally weighted --- not 4.0 on a national scale. The staff doesn't all share the BA passion for beer, but is eager to help. They will share the beer references available in the store, and will track down and place special orders, as noted above.
