To me, Nodding Head Lead Pipe Lager beer tastes a lot like soy sauce. Perhaps it is because grew up eating a lot of soy, but this smoky beer has too much of that unami/meaty character for me to really enjoy it. My friends who went with me to the brewpub noticed the flavor as well, but did not mind it as much as I did.

Appearance: black in color with a short 1/2" tan colored head. Some spotty lace develops.

Smell: malt sweetness is light but all that can be detected.

Taste: roasted malt, hints of prunes, some grassy tones, a mild bitterness, and a hint of alcohol warming makes up a well balanced beer.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Lightly crisp throughout. Very brief aftertaste here.

Drinkability: this beer was easy to consume and more than one pint can easily be enjoyed in a session. Worth a try if on tap.

On tap at Nodding Head on 9/13/08.

A - Really, really dark brown body bordering total blackness with deep garnet highlights and one-finger creamy light tan head that retained well and left intricate swatches of lace. This puppy is too dark to comment on carbonation.

S - Quite a complex little nose with black licorice/anise, bitter dark chocolate, some dark roasted and caramel malts, coffee, vanilla and sweet cream. Overall, this has a very nice blend of aromas.

T - Black licorice is at the forefront, but it's not overdone. There's also a sweet cream aspect blended with a subtle bitter coffee character and a hint of earthy hops in the backend that actually get more assertive as the liquid warmed up. The whole flavor profile is situated atop a sturdy base of caramel malt goodness.

M - Full-bodied lager with a thick, syrupy base and smooth, creamy texture with minimal prickle from the carbonation. Moderate bitter finish.

D - I find this dark lager to be quite complex and unique with lots of differnet flavor combinations. Overall, this is an interesting take from Nodding Head on the dark lager style.

Tasted on-tap 9/25/06 at Nodding Head Brewpub in Philadelphia, PA.

Pretty much pitch black in color with a decent tan head that left some lacing. Very robust dark malt beer with lots of character: some roastiness, some chocolate, and some sweet treacle flavors. Balanced a bit to the sweet side with the treacle standing out. Medium-Full bodied and creamy with a nice robust finish.

A Bock/Schwarzbier hybrid - darn nice in my book.

Per NH website: Black in color and brewed to bock strength.

Served as virtually black beer with modest tannish head. Slight lacing.
Smell is a nice mixture of roasted malt and daramel. Maybe a hint of toffee present.
Taste matches the smell, with strong notes of roasted sweet malt and molasses.
Finishes supriningly light and refreshing.
A nice easy drinking beer, but nothing special.

This is reportedly a Schwarzbier - Bock hybrid beer. To me it seemed more like a Schwarzbier that got too caramel malty sweet like a Bock; but it could as well be a Bock brewed roasty and dark with coffee characters like a Schwarzbier. Whatever it is ... It's tasty.

Appearance: Served an almost opaque black with hints of red hues. It has a beige head and moderate lacing.

Smell: Caramel and molasses in the nose with dark malts and some roasty coffee aromas in the nose.

Taste: Roasty dark malts with a hint of hop character and a creamy malty center. the finish leaves me with a subtle suggestion of coffee.

Mouthfeel: A light weight beer with decent carbonation gives away the lighter German black-beer character of this lager.

Drinkability: A refreshing easy beer that is simple and drinkable. I sampled a few others and was happy to have picked this one for drinking.

Hope this is helpful.

This beer poured a black color with some cherry highlights. The head was a creamy tan film that left some great lace.

Smells of coffee and dark, sour malts with a slight pineapple sourness.

Tastes of a bitter chocolate followed by a quick shift to sour malts and a hint of lime rind that is revealed through an electric tingle of bubbles. The finish fades towards coffee, the way coffee lingers around the roof of your mouth.

The mouthfeel is light but dense with a slight unobtrusive carbonation.

This one's definitely original and very well done. It is supposed to be a schwartzbier, bock hybrid or sorts. I think it worked out pretty well. There was a lot going on here and it was a lot of fun to drink. One of Nodding Head's better offerings.
