A beer-naming contest resulted in this Czech-style pilsner being called Rock Allotolager. Sounds nonsensical of course, though it does roll fancifully off the tongue and the brewer informs me that an inability to pronounce Rock Allotolager functions at the bar as a reliable sobriety test.
I was powerfully thirsty when this beer was served to me. But I couldnt bear to drink it at first. I had to watch it awhile. For five full minutes the head continued to rise like a volcanic dome on Mt. St. Helens. The carbonation roiled in fabulous tumult. It was a beautiful sight to behold. Two fingers of thick white suds arose from this pale yellow brew yielding an exceptionally dry aroma.
At last I drank and was treated to a superbly crisp and highly drinkable pilsner with a wonderfully dry taste and clean finish. The skilled infusion of Saaz and aromatic Hallertau hops is immediately apparent with a freshness that few Czech imports available in the U.S. can rival.
Rock Allotolager is a true work of art and was my favorite among the five lagers served by Mia & Pias during my November 2004 visit. It is a limited offering that I hope will be revisited.
