"Introduced New Year's Eve 1999 as our salute to the year 2000. Barley wine is a style of beer referred to as wine because of the high alcohol content (in this case 10.5%). Our barley wine is a nicely balanced beer made with three kinds of malts and bittered with Cascade hops (This barley wine is sometimes aged in a "Single-Barrell" Jack Daniels whiskey barrell. check the chalkboard at the pub to see if Whiskey Barrell Barley Wine is on tap when you visit us. Though I told myself I was only passing through for a quick pint of ale, I couldn't resist lingering for a glass of this barrel-aged barleywine that M&P had on draught in mid-July. I'd known this big ale to make infrequent appearances in Portland at places like The New Old Lompoc, but it's otherwise a rare occurrence. Most M&P beers are brewed to half this potency.
M&P serves this big fella in a stemmed wine glass. It is exceptionally clear in dark sensuous amber with a thin velvety head and cluster lace. Gazing into the rounded body of the glass, it looks like an amber crystal ball. The beer has the classic aroma and flavor of a highly hopped American barleywine with notes of fig, golden raisin, and warm honey and the seductive fragrance of strawberry and plum. Whisky flavor is present but negligible.
Though very smooth and drinkable, the alcohol still throws a bit of flame and I imagine another year in the cask would add further refinement.
