A half-pint pour at Bailey's; I, being a sucker for pumpkin ales, MUST try this one. Seriously, Fresh Hop + Pumpkin sounds like an autumnal euphoria might be heading toward my taste buds.
A: Murky-ish maple syrup/mahogany-brown pour. Look closely and the rising bubble streams appear like magic from the depths. Presented with barely a cover, an ivory creaminess recedes to a hugging ring. Sheeting lace tries in vain to stick, descends quickly.
S: Likeable 'pumpkin spice' aroma, nutty and earthy-sweet: allspice/nutmeg. Easy to catch a whiff of from a foot away, appealing.
T: Amber/caramel malt, a semi-sweet cereal with an ample dusting of spices. 'Fresh hop' comes across as a grassy green-ness, not a lot of oiliness or pungent bitterness - and I'm OK with that. What I'm NOT so OK with are timid flavors, and that's what I'm getting from this bready, kinda mundane malt-bomb.
M: Very mellow on the carbonation, a creamy though boring mouthful. Plenty yeasty, plenty doughy, not so interesting. Spicing lends some sparkle, but feel and weight (seems watery) can't compensate.
D: Easy to finish because, frankly, I really enjoy these spice/malt flavors. It would have to be a BAD pumpkin beer for me not to finish. This isn't a bad beer, but it is one that didn't quite impress as much as its alluring name promised; I could have another...or not. On this Election Night 2010, I vote: not.
