Bottle-conditioned, BB 22/06/2008, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass.
A: dark brown with mahogany shades when seen against light; a light-tan frothy head slowly builds up then lasts for a good while, on top of lively fizziness.
S: refreshingly sweet brown malts and winey dark fruits are buttressed by a roasty hint of sweet coffee as well as roast dark tea leaves, while a faint edge of earthy and cob-web-like dusty hop resins remains in the remote corner. Overall, slightly too acidic in terms of fruitiness.
T: the winey fruitiness with a bitter edge of burned sugar as well as sticky burned coffee leads towards stale and damp sour-bitterness as of old wood barrels... in the finish the bitter-nuttiness creeps up to balance with the overall stale sour-bitter theme, while the bitter hoppiness, in the form of rotten tree leaves, leaves a deep imprint on the wings of the tongue...
M&D: light-bodied, chewy in texture, and refreshing with very light fizziness; the balance of this ale gears towards the acidic fruity/grapey side, although the lingering bitterness does help a lot to smoothen that acidic edge. Overall, a reasonably tasty porter this is!
