On-tap at the brewpub. Listed as an American Porter due to the flavor profile and the addition of chocolate.
Pours black with a one-finger tan head. The head is lightly dusted with cocoa powder and so recedes faster than normal into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.
Smells alternatingly of sweetened dark chocolate and milk chocolate with roasted malt aromas providing the background.
Tastes good. Roasted malt and unsweetened dark chocolate flavors kick in almost simultaneously before sweetening a bit shortly thereafter. The chocolate is not as intense as it is in the aroma so the roasted malt flavors are allowed a bit more room to breathe, carrying through to a mildly bitter ending.
Mouthfeel is OK. It's a bit on the thin side which may have to do with the addition of cocoa powder, with smooth carbonation.
Drinkability is good. I finished my glass without any problems and could have another.
Overall I believe this is the first beer I've had that's been dusted with cocoa powder but I have to admit it helped the nose out a bit. Past that, I'd be interested to see how it compares to a proper pour, but either way I bet it's worth a shot.
