Had this beer over 2 years ago courtesy of leftpaw, slinging all the rare New Mexico beers all the time. 1st review of it here.
This is aged in malbec barrels for 2 years.
Pours black. I mean, scotch ales are almost there, usually a hint less dark brown than a porter, but this is dark, darker than some stouts even. Relatively thinner ring of head, tan in color, 1/4" in depth, recedes easily. Aroma is interesting, there's less "roastiness" in terms of malt, but the appearance appears to be darkened by the malbec usage. Does smell like red wine, wet wood, peat, swamp water.
The taste is not my jam, sweeter than expected, boozier than, well, its as boozy as expected, which was significant. I dunno if its the alcohol burn or the dark fruit like bitterness, but the bitterness is up there for style. This took on elements of a quad. Thought Malbec would be a little drier. Light notes of tobacco, moss, baker's chocolate, earth, black currant. Didn't jive with me, but they were thinking outside of the box.
