July 2006: On tap at the Suomenlinnan Panimo brewpub on the island of Sveaborg/Suomenlinna at the seaward approach to Helsinki (a UNESCO World Heritage site). This is an English style ale, golden to amber colour, slightly cloudy, moderate to low head. Moderate yeasty and hoppy aroma, some yeastiness and cloves in the well rounded flavour. Sufficient body to be a treat, light enough to be refreshing. Pleasant bitterness in the aftertaste. I’d say the brewer has done a good job with this one.

Appearance: Light copper, clean and clear. Pours a lively two finger head, receding quite quickly. Carbonation evident.
Aroma: Mild and malty, with aromatic hop undertones. Perhaps a bit of floral aromas and honey-like sweetness.
Taste: Nice balance of malt and hops. Rather nutty, with a hint of caramel. Very tasty and easy drinking.
Mouthfeel: Smooth and creamy. Moderate carbonation. Goes down easy.
Overall: The Suomenlinna Brewery has recently released a series of bottled beers, this being one of them. They used to be only available at the brewery, on the island of Suomenlinna just outside Helsinki. It's a pleasure to see them in the stores, as they do some very tasty beers. This red ale type brew is a nice session ale with plenty of flavour but nothing overwhelming.
