This was the latest seasonal offering during my most recent visit to the Upstream Brewing Company. I wasn't too impressed with this particular beer, unfortunately. Also unfortunate was the fact that this was their last cask offering as well, but lo and behold the cask was dry by the time I arrived. Surely that would have boosted this beer's rating by a few points.
The beer looks stunning. Has a light amber gold color, crystal clear with a carbonation that says "bling bling." The head is nice and creamy with a good retention and lacing. The appearance of this beer was the highlight, however.
The beer smelled like it was hopped with english varietals, obviously. Fuggles, or EKG perhaps? A malty caramel aroma escapes from the glass along with a hint of alcohol. At least it doesn't smell like butter, but I'm thinking "eh." That's right... not good or bad, just "eh." That pretty much sums up the taste as well.
For an English style, this seems to have a fairly rough bitterness, perhaps emphasized by the mineral content of the water from burton salts. If it weren't for that, this beer might have some promise. I think the cask ale version would have been just right.
