10 ounce glass
Bronze-brown in hue with coppery highlights, served with a half finger of head. Head retention seemed decent, the bubbles slowly faded to a soapy ring. No lacing. Overall, the appearance was respectable.
The nose seemly oddly herbal and sweet like liquor. While the alcohol is not raw I can detect it, easy enough. Not much true maltiness I really get a strong grape jelly aroma. Not basing this on any style the nose smells okay but for a Doppelbock it isnt what I am looking for. Celebrator this is not.
Big, sweet, cloying palate with lots of fruitiness which is followed by herbal flavors and black licorice, concord grapes, and Krispy Kreme donut glaze. It is sweet. Warming alcohol, my throat feels it burn on the way down. I dont mind it but in conjunction of the other flavors it doesnt work well. Much like the nose, all styles set aside, the palate tastes okay but this is not a Doppelbock. I cant trace its German roots. If they called it an American Strong Ale Id believe it. [As it warms more it becomes even more cloying and the grape flavors become louder yuck.]
Medium/medium-full in body, the carbonation is low but natural, the mouthfeel works well enough but there is a noticeable sluggish feel.
Drinkable? Only one small sip at a time. Frankly, this is not a beer Id go back for but I bet other beer geeks would like it. I cant imagine the average beer drinker finishing a glass. I am revolting against cloying, sweet beers that have no malt complexities. I am disappointed. Sampled downtown
