A - Served a clear red with a touch of orange and very little head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind a touch of lace.
S - Aroma is a mix of sweet caramel malts with some spices, chocolate, and farmhouse yeast smells.
T - Starts off with a mix of sweet rich caramel malts and grains with some farmhouse yeast spices and some chocolate. Through the middle, the yeast character gowns with a bit of funk and some more cocoa and bready malt flavors come through. The finish is a mix of earthy flavors with some spices, grains, chocolate, and yeast character.
M - Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a spicy and sweet finish.
D - Very drinkable. The chocolate added is an interesting take on the style, but works very well and the overall balance is quite nice.

Served on tap at The Hopyard in Pleasanton on 3/5/2012 (I'm going through older notes).
The beer is a biere de garde (not surprisingly), brewed with cocoa nibs.
A: Amber, with medium off-white head.
S: A little sweetness, and a surprising but light smoky note. Not particularly aromatic.
T: Roasty, with strong coffee and cocoa (obviously) notes, balanced by an interesting sourness. Also detecting sunflower seeds. Clean finish.
M: Very smooth, silky mouthfeel. Medium body (maybe a little on the lighter side of medium).
O: Pleasant and fairly unique.
