Sampled at the 2003 Holiday Ale Festival, Portland OR. I had some difficulty deciding how to categorize this beer. It's a Christmas ale, but decidely German; almost black in color; so it could be considered a schwarzbier except that it's an ale. I've never had a beer to compare it to, a shame since it was great. A roasty beer with a big chunk of malt and a large chocolate flavor. Hops are mellow and not too bitter, like many German beers. The roastiness was balanced just right and the beer was pleasingly complex. It says it's not a lager, but it has some of the similarly smooth and refined qualities. One of the lighter winter beers and one of the best. Out of the festival line-up, it seemed to be the best match for the pizza (the only eats at the fest). All of the other beers were way too big and would overwhelm the food. One of the highlights of the fest for me.
