On the last day of 2003 the Washington State Lottery saw fit to draw four of the five numbers I had chosen for their Quinto game. Two weeks later I ventured to Vancouver to collect a $1,000 cash prize. Feeling spirited and curious, I drove three blocks north from the lottery office and found the Hazel Dell Brew Pub. As fate would have it, it was Happy Hour, an event that lived up to its name that day.
I had a pint of Captain Vancouvers Irish Stout on draught that day, and returned several months later to try it again on nitro.
There is something heavy and funky in the smell of this beer; something that almost made me bolt. It simply shouldnt smell as it does with a saturation of phenols that lean closer to formaldehyde than beer. Strict BJCP judges would likely pan this beer on the demerits of its smell alone. But strangely enough, I enjoyed the strong coffee flavor that managed to survive the aroma. I cant account for this discrepancy between foul smell and appetizing taste. Its something of an anomaly.
The rest of Captain Vancouvers Irish Stout can be defined by its draped cranberry color, minimal carbonation, and the perplexing iconography of an Irish stout named for an English naval officer.
Stats: 5.5% ABW (7.0% ABV?) OG 1.064, TG 1.012
