A good dunkelweizen can be an exotic adventure in beer. Id hoped for as much when I drank Hazel Dells spring seasonal dark wheat beer. And while I enjoyed this beer well enough, it wasnt the adventure I was hoping for.
Hazel Dells Dunkelweizen has a light fruity aroma, and a deep crimson color that is neither clouded nor clear. The taste is yeasty with a splash of malty intent immediately smothered by a dry bitterness. Aside from no lace and a scant head, there are no compelling problems to report here. Its a mostly casual, enjoyable beer. I just might have preferred something a bit more risk-taking and complex.
