This is a classic Kölsch with an exclusive twist — growers at Hopfengut in Germany recently released the Huell Melon hop strain, with the clean bittering qualities of noble hop strains, but an elusive “honey-dew melon” aroma. So for Köld Schauer think easy-drinking, low bitterness, with a unique perfume. Those pilgrimages we’ve been taking to German hop fields are paying dividends…

Clear, golden color. Big, white head. Malt, hay, and light fruity notes in aroma. Sweet, malty beginning with strong hoppy bitterness from German hops. Well balanced.

Reviewed from (very) long-standing notes. Poured from the 12 oz. tall-and-skinny can into an El Catador teku glass. Just bought the six-pack tonight, can't wait to dig in!

A: Crystal clear gold, with lots of visible carbonation and two-fingers of fluffy white head that lasts for quite awhile. Very pretty for sure.

S: Pilsner malts up front, with floral hoppiness. Also hop notes of melon and and milder tropical fruit. Clean and fairly simple, but nice. Oddly, while it’s clearly pilsner malts in here, there’s not much (if any) of the sulfurous quality I often get from pilsner-heavy beers.

T: Light crackery sweet and pilsner malts, mild fruity yeast esters – but distinctly more of an ale yeast here. Hoppier than traditional - the hops are a bigger player here. Floral, melon, citrus rind, and a touch spicy. The white bread malt sweetness lingers, but ultimately the lightly bitter hops win out after the swallow.
NOTE: While the first can had essentially no sulfurous flavor from the pilsner malts, subsequent cans has a mild sulfur presence. While I didn't let that influence the scores given at all, my personal preference was diminished just a bit.

M: A light body, though maybe a bit heavier than traditional. Good carbonation sensation and low alcohol presence.

O: Really an enjoyable take on a Kolsch, though perhaps one that’s been “Americanized”. But also one that I really liked. Tasty, easy to drink, and clean. Can’t wait for the rest of the six pack - nice to have something a bit different in the fridge. and different than some other stuff I’ve gotten lately for sure.

My can was nearly a year old and the wet cardboard flavors and aromas masked most of the delightful qualities that the beer once may have had. Busch would not allow out of date beer to sit on retail shelves and if craft beer wants to play with the big boys they will do the same. I could do archeology and attempt to find redeeming qualities in this beer but in the end, it is the brewer's responsibility that I get a quality product.

A can ran me $1.99 USD at a Total Wine & More in Austin, TX.

I'm shocked they used Kölsch yeast in this...it drinks like a cheater Kölsch that used hum-ho ale yeast. Huell Melon hops are poorly showcased. Lacks the crisp cool refreshing mouthfeel of a great Kölsch.

Drinks like an American blonde ale brewed with German yeast. Not bad, but it definitely leaves something to be desired.

12oz, canned 19SEP2017 BB 18MAR2018. Hazed golden body with a tall white head that holds good retention. Grassy & spicy hop aroma with pale malt. Grassy and spicy noble hops, pale malt, maybe a bit wheaty, with some faint fruit notes from the Kölsch yeast. Medium body, moderate carbonation, semi-bitter dry finish keeps you coming back for more. Overall, I didn't pick up any honeydew melon as one of the descriptions mentions, but it was a very easy drinking beer nonetheless.

Sampled approximately five months past the canning date, Poured from 12-ounce can into a cylindrical glass. A slightly overly aggressive pour yielded a mountain of thick, white foam atop a hazy amber-colored body. The foam left a curtain of sticky lacing that was quite pretty. Lots of lively carbonation. Big aromas and flavors of light caramel and bready malt alongside herbal and floral hops. It delivers on its promise of honeydew and floral aromas as well. Substantial mouthfeel, with an assertive bitterness lingering on the dry finish. Overall, an excellent and interesting take on the style.

Poors a very clear deep golden with a very thick foam that stays around the glass forever. The aromas are of grain, bread dough, some yeast spicyness and a subtle fresh vegetal aroma, like cucumbers or melon. The hops, however, are the star: grassy and spicy. The taste offers some malt character, but the hops are pretty forward too. It's very floral and I can taste some sweet corn and citrus peel. Well done, well balances even though it is definetely a kölsch on the hoppy side.
