We're not saying you should worship what's inside the barrel ... but there's a certain righteousness about an ale made with three types of rye malts and then smoothed out in a blend of rye whiskey and bourbon barrels. The journey spans months, but the results are undeniable -- a RIGHTEOUS® endeavor indeed.

Brown color. Big, off-white head. Toffees, raisins, caramel and a hint of wood and vanilla in the aroma. Moderately sweet, malty taste with pleasant notes of wood at the end.

(march 7, 2018 can)

A: The color is literally that of the can's color, which is a burnt red/brown. A thin head lingers, and sticky lacing is left on the sides after swirling.

S: Boozy raisins and caramel.

T: Similar to the nose but more: boozy raisins and caramel, old grapes, rye bread, oak barrel. There's sort of a super dry manhattan cocktail flavor.

M: Consistency is silky and smooth. The oak, rye, and raisin flavors linger in the throat.

O: Wonderful beer! I love the flavors this one brings. It's very complex and decadent. For the price especially, it's a steal. Of course, this is a 2-year old can, but if a new batch is anything like this, then it's a solid A-grade for me.

Poured from a thin 12 oz Sixpoint can into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Nearly clear caramel/copper pour with 2 fingers of foamy white head. Great retention and lacing.

S: Bourbon and booze... a bit of rye grain, but mostly booze.

T.F: Rich, sweet, and malty to start. Caramel, toffee, and dark sugars... some spice and bite from the rye. Strong bourbon and booze.. a bit of fruit... earthy with a bit of oak. Medium bodied... warming... sweet and spicy at the finish.

O: A very boozy barrel aged Rye. Sixpoint did NOT skimp on the barrel character which overpowers the Rye. A late evening sipper... not one I'd want regularly, but a fun and tasty side-trip.

I love Rye beers and I love barrel aged beers..Put the two together and I'm giddy!
This one pours a deep translucent amber with a bit of sediment. Very little head other than the ring that stayed and left spotty lace.
Has the familiar, sweet barrel aged aroma and the taste follows right along..Richly malty, sweet through the middle with a nice, spicy rye finish. Full bodied with gentle carbonation. I really like this.

Got in a trade with The-Adjunct-Hippie. 12 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 3/7/2018. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep orange/copper/amber color with a 1 finger fairly dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice dense spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, brown sugar, raisin, plum, fig, cherry, date, apricot, red apple, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, spicy rye whiskey, toasted oak, biscuit, and brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of roast, oak char, citrus peel/zest, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, pine, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/rye/bready malts, bourbon/rye barrels; light-moderate citrus/earthy hops, and fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, raisin, plum, fig, cherry, date, apricot, red apple, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, spicy rye whiskey, toasted oak, biscuit, and brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of roast, oak char, citrus peel/zest, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, pine, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grassy bitterness; and bourbon, rye whiskey, oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, dark fruit, red apple, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, spicy rye whiskey, toasted oak, biscuit, brown bread/crust, light roast/char, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, pine, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/rye/bready malts, bourbon/rye barrels; light-moderate citrus/earthy hops, and fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness and rye/whiskey/oak spiciness balance; with no cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and rye/whiskey/oak spiciness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready/sticky/tannic, and lightly slick balanced mouthfeel that is great. Mild increasing warmth of 10.5%, with no lingering barrel booze after the finish. Overall this is an awesome barrel aged hoppy imperial rye. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/rye/bready malts, bourbon/rye barrels; light-moderate citrus/earthy hops, and fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the ABV, with the mellowly bitter/spicy/tannic/drying finish. Awesome balance between rich malts and bourbon/rye barrel presence/integration; with solid citrus/earthy hop presence, and fruity yeast character. Mild residual sweetness with lingering dryness. A really enjoyable offering. Very impressive for basically being a BA Rye IPA. Did not prefer it over the base beer, but will have to revisit it soon.

Canned March 7th, 2018. Poured into Thulsa Doom chalice.

Mixed Berry jelly color - that is, copper and mahogany mixed, with a tall fluffy stable head of 1 finger.

Aroma of slightly stale hops, rich and thick caramel, rye, bourbon barrel, tree sap, grass, and spice.

Flavor brings caramel, stale hop, pine, brown sugar, slight barrel sweetness, more pine, and bready/grassy malt. A lot like a barleywine.

Feel is somewhat thinned out and hot, but has a medium carbonation and body, with a nice heat on the back end.,

Overall, a decent BA rye beer. Very malty and piney at the same time, but those flavors blend together as it gradually loses its carbonation and fades to room temperature. An enjoyable rye beer.

Sixpoint Brewery "Righteous Ale - Barrel-Aged"
12 fl. oz. can, "CANNED07MAR18 10.5%ABV 1305"
$5.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Was Righteous Ale always barrel-aged? It's been so long since I've had this that I have no idea. OK, let's see how it pours... cloudy, chestnut brown, and with a densely creamy head of lightly yellowed off-white foam. The head retention seems to be pretty good. The aroma displays oak and whiskey and a bit of coconut. I don't know why I find that in so many strong barrel aged beers but it's almost always there. The head has dropped a bit now but there's some nice lacing where it once was. On to the flavor... it's got a lot of caramel to it, and it's sweetish but not sweet. The barrel is definitely there, lending notes of whiskey and oak. The rye comes through nicely, and it's just a little spicy. I'm not finding hops although I'm sure there's some there in the background; English types, nothing citrusy or piney. Oh, and of course the coconut, I get that every now and again. It's medium in body with a light bristle on the tongue that softens to allow it to become smooth in the end. It's got a dry finish with the spiciness of the rye, the dryness of the oak, and whatever bitterness is there - I'm guessing it's somewhere around 40. Overall I'm pretty impressed. I could be more impressed, but I'm still impressed. For fans of barrel aged beers, particularly whiskey barrels, this is a nice treat.

12 oz can from Tiger Mart (Clemson, SC) into a lager glass, one day after the Clemson Tigers crush Alabama to win the NCAA Football National Championship. in January 2019.
Look: Clear, deep copper colored body topped by a fairly durable, bone colored, creamy head. Plenty of lacing.,
Aroma: spicy rye, bourbon barrels and hops. Nicely complex.
The flavor has moderately high strength, with a prominent and very fine barrel aging effect. Very good balance in a harmonious blend of flavors. Medium roasted grains show through but bourbon barrel notes eventually dominate the aftertaste, including notes of vanilla, oak and bourbon.

Feel: medium-full body with lively, medium carbonation and a dry finish.
Overall: excellent barrel aged ale with well hidden ABV, lots of flavor, a fine aroma and restrained bitterness.

12oz skinny can. Poured out a dark amber color with a small, tan head of foam. It smelled of bourbon, spicy rye, oak and vanilla. Sweet booziness, rye, vanilla, oak and toffee taste.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) can into a custom Captain Lawrence taster pint; canned March 7, 2018.
A: Pours a slightly hazy and highly effervescent orange-copper color with a one finger, foamy, egg shell white head, impressive retention, and rings of sticky lacing.
S: Aromas of caramel, cocoa, whiskey, butter (only initially), honeysuckle, and white pepper.
T: Semisweet. Flavor of caramel, cocoa, and white pepper strong with booziness and contribution of barrel very evident. Peppery bitterness very evident but in a solid balance to the sweetness and maltiness.
M: At least medium bodied with impressively persistent champagne style bubbles throughout.
O: This is an excellent example of what a rye beer can taste like. I am not a huge fan of the unfettered use of barrel aging, but it certainly worked here. Curious what the base beer was like.
