The hazy pale yellow, orange tinged beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 1/2” small bubbled white head that soon recedes to a ring around the glass and an irregular thin island of foam on the surface and no lacing on the sides of the glass. Sipping leaves a few widely scattered patches of lacing on the sides. By mid-way through the beer there’s hardly any foam at all remaining.
The aromas are slightly sharp and full of citric zest. There is also some tropical fruit here with pineapple, grapefruit and mango showing.
The flavors are much as expected from the nose with citric zest that blends well with the tropical fruit notes of pineapple, grapefruit and mango. While the citric bitterness is noticeable it is neither strong nor rasping on the tongue even though there’s little or no sweetness showing from the malt.
The mouth feel is on the light side of medium bodied and prickly with the light, persistent finely bubbled carbonation. The finish begins as the tropical fruits begin to fade first to be followed by the citrus leaving the long, crisp and dry finish to some light citric zest bitterness.
Overall I’m enjoying drinking this beer both for it’s aroma/flavor profile and for some of the things that make it different from the norm of what I’d expect in a conventional IPA. While in the long run I might prefer having some caramel malt sweetness to balance the bitterness that seems unnecessary in this case since the impression this beer creates is one of lightness, crispness and dryness.
