Whoa to you, oh, Earth and sea, for Welch sends this drink with wrath because he knows the mash aint short.
Let him that hath understanding reckon the darkness of the wheat, for it is brewed in Brooklyn.
It's number is SIXPOINT!

This beer's near black! A dark tan head. It is two fingers thick before it fades to a small cap. That's what I see. Ya'll believe! It's almost dark as night, highlights of mahogany.

The smell is strong. A glass of dreams. Tis a big wallop of cocoa and bitters of pine tree. With a tart wheat, and citrus peel. The mellow bread that twists with cream and ripe fruit strike a deal. Yeaaa!

Taste's of black espresso and wheat cracked, ripe fruit and cocoa dust and citrus hops a must.

Mouth is dry, with baker's cocoa high, a mild smack of spice, a hint of apple slice.

Sixpoint beer, the brewers of the East. Fine craft ales. Malt and hops released!

This beer is pretty unique.

Taste is Wheaties with slight hop.

mouth feel is dry with a spritz top.

I could drink this one non-stop.

A wonderful dark wheat brew this is from sixpoint and crew.

I stocked up for Blizzard 2010 by getting a growler from WF Bowery beer room. Sadly the blizzard was a bit of a dud, but on the plus side- the beer was not and I got a snow day off of work. So it all worked out in the end.

A-Pours as a advertised, black, but upon closer inspection, its more of a really dark brown on the edges. Gives off a 1-2 finger slightly off white head that fades down to a thin skimming, a clump off bubbles and some moderate lacing. Kind of reminds me of Pizza Ports Midnight Sessions.

S- Roasted and toasted grains, bitter coffee, burnt wood but not smokey. Mostly tasty grains though- smells good.

T- The toasted grains come through in the front, woodiness, burnt toast, coffee, some bitter chocolate hints, some wheat and bitter hops bite at the end that lingers.

M- This is a pretty mild bodied brew, with low carbonation that persists throughout the whole swallow. Makes for a real easy drinker.

D- I really enjoy this beer. This is a very, very sessionable beer for me. It is not some crazy, extreme, over the top beer. It is tasty & easy to drink. I will come clean, normally I switch up my growler fills- but I got this one 2 times in a row I liked it so much. Definitely recommend.

Reviewed on 11/1/2009. Growler from Big Z Beverage. Pours a deep brown with a small ring of white head. Aroma of buttery popcorn and that's it. Flavor is also intensely buttery popcorn with a burnt, smoky finish. What happened to this beer? Something went wrong...yuck.

Pours a murky dark brown color with a tight clingy light brown head that left a sheet of lacing on the side of the glass. The aroma is of a light roasted malt, some caramel/butter notes and an herbal spice. The taste starts off with a bitter roasted malt, a tea like sour flavor, a hint of butter and light fruit. I am not picking up much from the wheat but the brew has a nice robust roast malt flavor. A moderate feel with, tingly to soft carbonation; finishes with a roasty bitterness. A big roasty American Dark Wheat. I appreciate the roasty flavors but would like to see some of the wheat pop through. Still quite good though.

I really enjoyed this offering from Sixpoint. This beer has a great coffee/chocolate/wheat smell and taste, and is very, very drinkable. a great mix of flavors, and I could drink it all night. You dont see many black wheats, and they rarely ever have a descent hop taste. This beer is a real winner. Beer had a perfect amount of carbonation and thickness that kept you coming back for more. A must try if you find it.

Poured a deep brown hue with a half finger short lived white head. There was weak retention and little lacing.

The smell featured a soft caramel and a slight roasted malt.

The taste consisted of a subtle roasted barley, charcoal, and a touch of wheat spice. Good dose of piney hops at the finish.

The mouthfeel was toward the thinner side of the style. Good residual dryness.

Overall a tasty and easy to quaff ale. Pretty unique.

Poured a dark brown, near black color, with less than a finger of off-white head. Spotty lacing. The smell was decidedly roasted malt, with some cocoa powder thrown in there. The flavor was more complex with dark fruit, most notably ripe plum, in the mix along with said chocolate and toasty flavor. Very silky on the palate, and thin enough to make it sessionable. Very unique.

On-tap at Tap and Table in Emmaus, PA for $5/12 oz. Appeared black with a tan head. This beer was much closer to a good porter than a wheat beer. The dark malts provided dry cocoa powder and milk chocolate flavors while the wheat provides a sweet and spicy undertone to an otherwise dark malt-dominated beer. Very drinkable and certainly a good change of pace. This beer is also head and shoulders above all other American dark wheats I've ever tried.

Poured into a pint glass, has very dark
This pours a dark, cloudy, brown, finger head of tannish foam. There's some good lacing, don't really see a lot of beers this color. Smell could be a little stronger, hints, of roasted malts and chocolate. The Taste is an upfront roasted malt, semi-sweet chocolate, a touch of smokiness. Some wheat notes in the finish, very light bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium, carbonation light, a very smooth brew, and easy to drink. Not one of my favorite styles but I think it is above average for its style

drank on 4.21.09 at Capone's in Norristown.

this is actually my first black wheat which I was excited to try.

it pours a nice dark brown with burgandy red tints. decent off white head. can't smell too much. maybe the atmosphere was limited my ability, but not a whole lot in the smell. some tasted malt and grain, a little chocolate smell, maybe a little burnt toast.

Initial tart and fruity taste with definite chocolate and roasted malts in the flavor as well. very smooth and creamy. a wonderful mix of unique flavors put together in one brew. light body, great mouthfeel, great balance of flavors. definitely unique in my opinion. there was also a certain crisp and clean feel to go along with the smoothness.

I really enjoyed this beer. I will try and find this one again and others in the style.

On tap at Capone's on 4/11/2009. It was served in a Dale's Pale Ale standard pint glass.

"Masons Black Wheat" poured a dark cola brown hue with plenty of dark ruby red highlights along the sides. The head of foam on this beer was about 1 inch in height and light tan in color. This head of foam had great retention that left behind a big string if foamy tan rings, one streak of lace, and a few spots of lace.

Light aroma that was mostly roasted malts with a sweet yeast background. Hiding behind the malts and yeast was the scent of milk chocolate, a hint of roasted coffee beans, and a spatter of fruits here and there. I guess it was just me, but I thought that aroma of sweet yeast had to go. It was covering up all the good aromas in this beer.

Don't let the term "Dark Wheat" throw you off. The taste was all about the roasted malts. Directly behind the roasted malts was the taste of roasted coffee beans, and dark chocolate. toward the end of the taste, some sweet yeast and dark fruits will emerge from the background.

This was a light easy drinking dark wheat beer that had a tiny aftertaste of of roasted malts, roasted coffee beans, a splash of milk chocolate, and a hint of sweet yeast.

Not bad for my first ever Sixpoint beer. Not a bad Wheat Ale, but it really didn't do anything for me. It was probably the smell and taste of sweet yeast that sort of ruined it for me. This beer however made me want to seek out more of their beers. If you like wheat beers with no wheat taste in them, then give this one a try.

A hot looking sight. Bone white head ontop of a watered-down coffee pour. Aroma of coffee, toasted, buttery bread and grilled cheese. (I know, fuckin weird, but I can't deny it.) Light cocoa powder, nutella smeared toast, and ovaltine powder. A crisp body with a sharp, dry finish. Refreshing, thirst quenching, dark fun.

Very dark brown, almost black in color with a cinnamon head that leaves lacing. A pleasing ground coffee aroma with notes of chocolate roast, some raisins. Tastes of roast, burnt sugar, some maple, a light coffee echo in the aftertaste. Fairly light-medium in body and quite sessionable for any season.

Pours thick black with little head and a fairly normal looking dark beer.
Smell comes roasted very heavy smokey wheat scent with suprisingly a hint of hops
Taste is roasted wheat with a mild hop lick on the back end
Feels full on the palate not watery but not a heavy wheat. Bit of hops linger nothing strong
Very drinkable and can be sessioned
Edited after talking to brewer calling it a dweiss

Poured a deeper brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of toasted and burnt malts and wheatiness. Tastes of roastiness, wheat, chocolate, and some lighter nuttiness. Light lacing left on the glass.

You don't see Sixpoint frequently enough in Boston, but it's - not surprisingly - everywhere in New York. I started with Sixpoint's Mason's Black Wheat, which in many ways seemed similar to a Schwarzbier.

Pours a dark, clear black with garnet hints at the edges. The brown head thins to a film. The roasted malt aromas are very reminiscent of a Schwarzbier. There are also notes of chocolate, ripe fruit and raisins.

Roasted malts are dominant upfront, moving into a chocolate-tinged fruitiness in the center, before the roast backbone reemerges in the finish with an accompanying bitterness. Highly carbonated, light-bodied, crisp.

Flavorful and easy-drinking. Roasty with a sweet center.

pours a dark, dark brown, almost black, but the wheat definitely lightens it up just a tad. Brown comes through the edges and the head is light tan. The smell is of roasted malt, awesome. The taste gives somewhat of roasted coffee flavor. It's a pretty awesome beer. The wheat really makes it special.

Growler from New Beer.

I've had this before at Fette Sau before. House beers aren't really that exclusive anymore I guess.

What initially was going to be a review of their Gorilla Warefare Coffee Porter, turns out to be some Mason's Black Wheat in that unlabeled vessel. Maybe there's coffee in the one next to it(or next to that? :P).

Charred ruby black pour, oatmeal-ish head. Chinese calligraphy-looking lace.

Smell was like a mild dry stout but with a slight hint of lactose. Carob, toasted grain, granola-ish, gentle.

Taste composed of charred white bread, ash, a touch of carob powder, & rice husks. A bit of a satisfying richness on the finish.

Carbonation was on; semi-dry. Very much the feel of a base stout.

A good pounder, with more to offer then a house tap should.

One of Sixpoint's more approachable offerings. That makes what, three(?) now. :P

This pours a very dark brown with about a finger head of tannish foam. There's some good lacing.

The smell is all nice and roasty and has a pretty strong nose of chocolate. Smells delish.

The taste has a nice roasted malt flavour up front followed by some semi sweet chocolate notes. a very light touch of dark chocolate or cocoa that adds light bitterness, and near the finish, I pick up some wheat tones. Oh, and when I swish the beer in my mouth, I notice a bit of lemon zesty tartness, not too much mind you, but it's there and for me, adds a nice dimension to the drinking experience. Man is this puppy easy to drink. Slow down, Bill! Not because it's an abv power house....because it's so damn tasty and I don't want it to go away too quickly.

The mouthfeel is medium and the carbonation is lightly done which makes for a very smooth brew and again, oh so drinkable.

Drinkability? I think I've already answered that. 5.7%abv, great taste and mouthfeel...yep, I thoroughly enjoyed the session. This is my first sample from Sixpoint and colour me impressed.

A - Poured with a thin slightly off-white head. Deep brown color

S - Slight roasted chocolate malt aroma, and overall it was pretty muted in this dept.

T - Rich chocolatey malt (bittersweet) with some degree of wheat flavors. Roasted and dry finish

M - A bit creamy MF, and even for a cask it really lacked in any noticeable carbonation

D - Very pleasant and drinkable, and one of the more balanced offerings from Sixpoint.

Overall, this was an interesting style and is definitely worth checking out for at least the novelty factor.

Had this on-tap at Sunset, and was actually a little disappointed. But I had never had this style before either, so maybe it takes a bit of getting used to.

A- It pours a very dark color, with a slight tint of dark purple-red, like a plum, color.

S- Roasted malt is the most notable scent, but even that is slightly understated. Not much going on for me in the smell department.

T- It doesn't have the taste you'd expect from a wheat. There is no noticeable fruitiness, but rather goes down more like a brown or black ale.

Kind of fizzy on the tongue, but not too much. It wasn't really something that I'd go for on a regular basis. For now I'll stick with the traditional wheats.

Had this on two different locations last week the Dive Bar in Worcester on tap ($5.00) and the Sunset in Allston on tap ($6.00).

A: Dark brown with garnet highlights. Weak light tan head.

S: Roasted and toasty. Sweet. No hop character. Some restrained fruitiness.

T: Taste runs with the nose. Toasty and roasted. Tasted similar to a Schwarzbier to me. Caramel flavors also noticeable. Can't pick up any particular wheat character.

MF: Medium mouthfeel with more than moderate amount of carbonation.

D,notes: I quite liked this beer. Not to heavy but with enough character to make it an interesting beer.

Poured a dark dark brown, pretty much black but when you hold it to the light the color is a bit like cola. Pretty much no head at all.

Very malty nose, soft aroma's of roasted malts, very subtle hop profile.

A little earthy, very malty, slightly sweet roasted malts.

Good carbonation, medium bodied, great mouthfeel.

A great and very drinkable beer, went extremely well with the pulled pork and spicy sausage I had
