Pours black with a thick crème head. Flavor has a slight bitter bite to it. Decent enough malty backbone to it. It's smooth and well bodied, sure. No wild character to it though. Feel has a milder biting carbonation to it and the liquid is thick enough. Easy to drink. A nice departure from the numerous heavily hopped Sixpoint productions we many times see.

Draught.

Pours dark brown with red highlights shining through in the light, and a pillowy tan head.

Aroma is round, roasty, a bit of cocoa and hint of espresso, with a bit of piney hops underneath. Clean.

Taste is smooth and clean - roasty, sweet malt, hint of cocoa, piney hops peek through, with a dry bitterness that comes out on the finish - toasty, with a bit of cocoa.

Mouthfeel is slick, with a medium heavy body and medium to low carbonation.

Felt like the hops could have been pulled back a hair to better let the malt shine - could have been my own expectations, could have been the form the hops took (ie, very Pacific Northwest) that I wasn't crazy about.

Reviewed on 9/15/08. Growler. Pours a dark brown with no real head just some tan bubbles. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, bitter chocolate, and a light sweetness in the background. Flavor continues along these lines with a nice roastiness and some sweet malt and molasses. Pretty tasty but certainly not what I had expected from a doppelbock (I'm not complaining though). Nice balance of roast and sweetness without being too sweet.

Enjoyed this one at the Gingerman the other day.

A: poured into a chalis, appropriate glassware alwasys as this ginmill is skilled at doing, to present a resonant dark red/purple shine with a two plus finger head that laced and stuck around in frothy fashion for some time.

S: The nose gave off a rich textured roasted malts, slighlty bitter chocolate and a cornocopia of dark fruits.

T: Flavor followed the nose but then added with stronger malt presence, further candies and dried fruits of currants and figs and various other fruits.

M: Clearly nice and thick, creamy with the head remaining, ABV not too overpowering but present nonetheless.

D: For a thickboy, I enjoyed the carbonation remaining to keep the candied theme going but never overpowered by the hops. Gets better as it warms in all categories.

Had this on tap at the Blind Tiger Ale House last night. I'm not that familiar with Dopplebocks and this is the first beer from Sixpoint that I've ever had. Most of what I consume is retail so given that all of their offerings are via taps, I felt that it was time to see what the hype is about. Needless to say, I was pretty impressed with this beer and would love to try the others out when I finally get around to it!

This had the pour I expected - dark, not that thick, and with a moderately frothy head. The lacing wasn't anything spectacular as well. Then came the taste...a wonderfully sublime mix of currant, caramel, plum, and chocolate with roasted and tart hints underneath as well. This had a rye-like taste and consistency to it and was quite warming, but the hops aren't that noticeable at all. My favorite aspect of this beer was the bock-like flavor and aftertaste, but with the depth and alcoholic content of a winter warmer.

Before I saw the 7.40% ABV, I thought it was closer to 8 or 9%. It's that strong, but it never detracts from the beer at all. I'd love to see what this would be like on cask since I thought it was served to me just a bit too cool. Otherwise, this was a great choice and worth going out my way for!

On-tap at Jimmy's No. 43, served in a chalice

Appeared a tawny, dark brown with a thin off-white head. No lacing.

Smells of raisins, prunes, dark fruit, semi-sweet chocolate. Not as sweet as other dopplebocks.

Taste mimics the nose. There is a faint hop presence that might cut through the sweetness of the malts a bit, rendering it not as sweet as the style usually is. I actually prefer it this way.

Medium bodied, dry.

A sipper at 7.4%, but definitely tasty.

On-tap at Ginger Man in New York City...
Quite possibly one of my favorite Doppelbocks and an all-around outstanding depiction of the style from this little known craft brewer in Brooklyn...
Pours a deep, dark, purple hue with an enormous foamy and frothy head...
Smell: Intricate, deep aroma replete with hints of rich, roasted malts, deep, dark chocolate, dehydrated fruits...
Taste: The flavor was superb, loaded with depth, a nice, strong, malt-backbone and a wonderful deep, dark chocolate taste, along with nuances of figs, prunes, and plums...
Creamy, thick, rich mouthfeel along with an excellent level of drinkability for a hefty 7.4% ABV...
Great stuff...
Highly recommended...

Poured with an excellent, albeit moderate, head. Head had a light caramel color, which looked very pleasant.

A - Tawny, darker brown coloring. Lacing after every sip, throughout the entire beer.

S - Raisiny / dried plum smell. Very light on aromas compared to other versions of the style

T - Excellent taste, not as sweet or syrupy as the coloring and aroma suggest. A bit dry in fact. As it's a Sixpoint beer, there are some hops that sneak to let you know where it was brewed. Overall great dopplebock taste, and representative of the style.

M - Definitely coats the palet, but not a hugely mouth-filling beer. Very pleasant.

D - I could definitely do more than one, but it's a bit dry in the finish for me to have more. You definitely can't catch the 7.4% ABV, which is great, but this is still a strong beer on taste.

Overall, very great beer. Sixpoint just doesn't dissappoint.
