(From notes)

A - Muddy brown color (almost like a mud puddle); and poured with a thin eggshell colored head

S - Ginger; juniper; touch of baked bread (gingerbread perhaps?) all jump out from the aroma. Very enticing, and spicy

T - Spicy ginger at the outset; white pepper; the piney aromas come through on the taste as well

M - Medium body; very muted carbonation (on cask) and suited the brew really well

D - OK; couldn't do more than a pint as the ginger/pine and other spiciness got to be a bit much.

Overall, interesting brew and I could revisit during the holidays or some other random point in time. By no means a regular visit. Still, very much worth trying.

Had this on cask a few months back at Rattle N Hum in NYC. Cloudy brown pour with a very thin head and minimal lacing. The smell is inviting; no shortage of ginger, jasmine, and maltiness. The flavor burst my bubble; malty sweet at first, but way too much ginger (more than likely accentuated by the cask aspect). Even the nice dry finish is overshadowed by an annoying lingering ginger/spice aftertaste. I had trouble finishing one pint.

On cask at The Blind Tiger, NYC.

Poured a murky dark amber hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was decent retention and good lacing.

The smell featured a light grainy malt and an herbal Ginger spice.

The taste mimmiced the smell and finished with a good herbal spice.

The mouthfeel was light and vibrant.

Overall a tasty and unique ale.

From a cask at the Brazen Head manned by Alex Hall.

Surprisingly dark. It's a cloudy dark brown with a limited white cap that leaves little lace, no doubt due in part to the limited carbonation. There was just enough there to bring out the flavor and give a little tingle to the tongue. Perhaps at about 1.8 volumes CO2/ltr.

There's ginger and toast and chocolate in the aroma. Nice.

In the flavor it's just slightly malty sweet at the front, and from there on in it's ginger in caramel. The chocolate note found in the nose doesn't appear. A solid bitterness backs it, and ginger lingers heavily in the finish, laying on the tip of the tongue. Dry and spicy.

Overall, it's certainly not an unpleasant pint, but neither is it very exciting. It's a spiced beer, and the spice comes through properly but I don't think the malt really supports it. It's just not lively, and maybe too one-sided. Perhaps overdone with ginger?
