Tasted on 26th March 2006. Could not find the BB date (on the neck of the bottle), 500 ml bottle. Label suggests a serving temp of 10-12 degrees.
Poured into a pint tumbler, had to give it some welly to promote the head. Colour was a dark tan to redwine hue with a whitish head. Slight haze present.

Smelled subdued with hop aroma and maybe some port.
Tasted slightly sweet (malt) with some toffee.

This beer would be best taken with food. Label suggests with game, or other meat dish. I think that is where this beer belongs.

I want to start this review with a reservation: The sharp sweetness that I found in this beer might be a lactose infection. I will return to this ale later and I might revise the review then.

The colour is brown-red; the liquid is a little bit cloudy.

The smell is roasted with some bitterness, diacetyl and nuts. Quite nice, I think.

The carbonation is a little sharp with lots of small bubbles.

The taste is very sweet (almost saccharine-like) and wine-like with a full-bodied flavour. The bitterness is rather mild. There are also notes of brown sugar and herbs. The long aftertaste is also dominated by the heavy sharp sweetness with notes of strong wine and fruit drops.

I am unconvinced of this ale, but as I said, it might be damaged.

Update! I have tried another bottle, and that was better than the one that I reviewed. Most of the review above is still valid, but the sweetness is not that dominant in a healthy bottle. The grades have been changed according to that.
