Served On-Tap
A — Pours a coppery and dark ruby brown hue into the glass. There is a cream colored head that forms and struggles to leave behind much lacing.
S — Smells of some sweetness and a bit of smokiness, a bit of some bitterness as well. This is nicely smokey and roasted without being overbearing.
T — Tastes rich, sweet, heavy, full bodied, and a bit sweet. Little bit of smokiness comes though again as well.
M — Medium bodied, long and lingering finish.
O — OK overall, not a style I've had much of, really nice bit of smokiness here.

On tap from the restaurant, pours a dark brown almost black with a mocha coloured thin creamy head. The smell is that of a Porter with heavy roasted malts and a nice sweet scent. It tastes like a Porter too with mollasses, smoke and bread flavours. It has a lighter body with a clean mouthfeel. No bitterness but also not too sweet. This is an easy to drink beer with good flavour. The ABV is 5.3%

I was served a pint from the tap at the brew pub in Anacortes, Washington.
A: It poured a dark mahogany colored body with a one-finger off-white head that was dense and sticky. The head receded slowly and supported even and layered lacing.
S: It had a sweet and malty aroma with some hints of ripe fruit and smoky nuts.
T: The sweet and roasted malts were dominant flavors. There was a creamy yeasty flavor. The alcohol was well hidden and there presence of hops was difficult to differentiate.
M: It had a light to medium body with a clean and dry finish with a bit of sour aftertaste. It was moderately carbonated.
D: It was a very pleasant MDL that could easily last out a long session.

a style not widely seen here in the fourth corner. while almost black in color you can give this to your "lyte" beer drinking friends and they will love it as much as us beer geeks do. i believe this is seasonal only and more's the pity. get it when you can.

Appearance This one came out of the tap a very dark brown in color with a small, retentive head.
Smell The light, malty nose was rather modest. I could pick up some decent roasty notes but otherwise things were pretty quite.
Taste The roasted malts came out burnt at the tongue, and they were a bit grainy for my preference. This Dunkel did have a bit of sweetness though and some good bready notes.
Mouthfeel This was a solid medium-bodied with a light touch of yeasty sourness.
Drinkability This was big for a MDL. I can recommend it but would suggest that you drink it alone without food.

This was an interesting surprise on at Redbones...I've had some the last two nights. Pours a very dark black, with a few garnet tones (I'm reminded of flat coco-cola). Smell is very clean, no hint of smoke (a newsletter for the brewery says that some of the malt is applwood smoked). I found it malty, but rather more subtle than what I expected. The carbonation was nice and small, so the mouthfeel was very pleasant (not syrupy at all, yippee!) I think I could drink these all night and be very happy. Reminded me of fresh German beer...so for an American brewery, I think this is quite a good beer. Seek it out. Pat
