Broadsword Scottish Ale
Anacortes Brewery & Rockfish Grill

Poured from a minigrowler into a MacAndrew's thistle glass. Pours a medium reddish orange with a thin head that dissipates to tiny patches and no lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, dark and light stone druit, peat, berries and a hint of orange. Flavor is smoky biscuit and caramel malt, dark dried fruit, peat; flavor thins out a bit then transforms into a smoky berry and dark stone fruit finish with lingering peaty smoky. Medium bodied with light creaminess. A nicely made scotch ale with a quite authentic peat component and good full maltiness. A little booziness in the aroma and finish, but pleasant balance between dryness and a little fruit sweetness. Some intriguing bitterness in the finish that must be from the smoked malt and maybe a touch of hops. Nicely done to style. Like other beer I've had from this brewery, solid and enjoyable.

 

 

 

 

 

Really huge and malty-- it's the Loch Ness malt monster. Winey and sweet, thick and sturdily built. Flavors of burnt sugar and the deep, dark scorched grain taste, along with the sweet Sugar Daddy caramel. Blackberry fruit and tanginess, with some woody, smoky notes.

Brewed with peat-smoked malt and Black Patent malt, among others. Hops are Perle, Cascade, and Mount Hood. IBUs are 35. Not very bitter, but it does have a nice hoppy resiny taste. Dark amber with a very long-lasting foam. On tap at the brewery restaurant in Anacortes.

 

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a clean, clear coppery red color with about a half-inch of light khaki colored head that had decent retention and lacing.

The aroma was on the sweet side with some nice peaty malt in the background. The flavors were pretty similar, sweet malts, a bit of peat and a hint of hops at the back.

The body was solid without being heavy. Drinkabilty was good, especially considering that this one of my least favorite styles. Overall, another solid brew from one of my favorite regional breweries.

A- deep translucent brown with a white head that left slight lacing partially down the glass

S- strong peat annd brown malts, delicious yet it would be harsh to noobs- a very pleasant aroma

T- very peat-dominated, with a bit of caramel character

M- chewy and very thick, warming to a point with decent carbonation

D- it's kind of a sipper, but that allows you to savor it as it warms up

I had this as me and my girlfriend were waiting for a table to become available, and enjoyed it thoroughly as we sifted through the menu.

A sullen but proud ale - rusty brown or dark leather with strong peat character. I don't expect a big ale of this sort needs adornment with a show of lather. Certainly none was found here. But the aroma was surprisingly shy - just a distant whiff of peat. Beyond its peat essence Broadsword is clean and malt driven but neither complex nor assertive. It is serviceable though not standout.

Appearance – This one is a solid dark brown in color with a big, off-white puffy head.

Smell – These malts have some big sweetness to go along with the scotch characteristics and light peat smokiness.

Taste – This ale has some huge malts. It is humongous. It is exceptionally sweet and laden with big scotch flavors. The peat and smoke are subtle but assertive.

Mouthfeel – This one is bigger than medium-bodied but well shy of heavy. It’s a big beer that is sticky sweet and shows off some good alcohol notes.

Drinkability – You could almost call this a wee heavy session ale. It is so tasty and big yet so smooth and sweet it’s almost addictive.
