a sturdy and well built imperial milk stout infused with coffee. its really solid beer, my first i think from these guys, who have some sort of confusing chain or somehow affiliated breweries that go by some different names. i always sort of inherently distrust these types of places for some reason, but then a beer like this comes along and straightens me out. matte black with a nice body and a lot of lasting off white head on top, bubbly for the style and the size. aroma and flavor of deep roasted coffee, that almost scorched bitter aspect of it, warming like a good cup in the winter, with a hint of green vegetal pepper to it, but not oxidation or a stale thing, just sort of a nuance of the coffee. i get a vanilla whisper in here too, charcoal, and bakers chocolate bitterness too. its not overly complex which is part of its appeal i reckon, and the milk sugar comes in just enough to cream up the feel and sweeten up the bitter just a bit, but its not too much and i like what it contributes. the earthy wintery nature of this is very appealing, and there is nice balance with the lactose and the coffee together. this is really well made beer, and worthy of the competition recognition it has received. i will have to get into some more of their stuff if its all going to be this good...
