12 oz Nutcracker Hazelnut Porter pint glass filled from a fresh growler. Got at the Ram in Schaumburg.
A - Pours a dark ruby brown color that's clear and a thin tan head. No retention or lacing left.
S - The aroma is bursting with hazelnut sweetness that smells like, as my friend, an ex-employee of Starbucks, puts it, "coffee syrup." A light hint of roasted malts too but it doesn't really resemble beer at all.
T - The flavor has a hint of roasted malts more so than the nose but it's almost entirely hazelnut coffee creamer flavor. (Note: last year the beer was brewed with syrup, this year it's added to the normal porter upon serving.) Either the bartender mixed it wrong, or they have a brew master who can't balance the flavors. It's all sugary syrup flavor.
M - Medium-bodied and ultra-sweet with a smooth feel and a long sugary finish.
D - With each sip it becomes increasingly difficult to drink. It tastes like drinking coffee creamer. After losing out on a growler last year's brewed batch I was excited to get a growler this year but I'm really disappointed to find out they mix the beer with syrup. Not a good call on that one quality-wise.
