could probably also be listed as new england ipa, although for me all the rye on this and the darker color make it better as a rye beer listing. i think this is the right brew, so many locations and stuff its not all real neat online here, but this is flowing in boise right now and really is pretty distinctive, if a bit sloppy from a refinement standpoint. really messy looking reddish brown and just packed with sediment, super thick, looks like the end of a keg but they keep pouring like this, a creamy inch plus of off white head on top sits easy, puffy and almost nitro looking. the beer smells and tastes better, and lighter, than it looks. the rye is neat, both spicy and dry and earthy, pale and familiar, and then richer and almost more caramelized and dense, cool full spectrum profile of the grain, and its pretty bold in the mix, i appreciate it leading rather than being an accent, too many of these play it too safe with this key ingredient. the hop profile is also kind of spicy to this hits the palate pretty hard. i like how long it is, appreciate the little bit of sweetness they left in it so it stays balanced, but the ferment isnt clean, the body is almost grossly big, and there is some slop to this, trub, whatever, its kind of gross to drink, even though it tastes good. the hops have some woody dankness, a little bit of a gin botanical thing, and present as nice and fresh, and definitely compatible with the rye, so its a shame the beer isnt a little better overall. hoping this was just a bad keg and that itll be better next time, because this has a ton of promise, but it was served where it was made, so no excuses if thats the case. would pass on another in its current state, but i hope they revisit this, still a great rye profile here and nicely selected hops to match...
