Poured from a plastic growler (thats right, plastic) into my glass (thats right, glass)
DFH snifter. The beer pours a lazy oily brown black with a listless cocoa colored head. The smell is heavy of bready malt with a faint hop finish on the nose. The taste mimics the smell with a little more hops at the end in taste than in nose. The mouthfeel is flat and bland. This is probably due to a bad seal on the lame growler. I dont care for soda in plastic, let alone beer. Overall, I was unimpressed with this beer from start to finish. Ram, See Wookey Jack, Thats how you make a Black IPA (albeit with rye)

Served in a shaker pint glass at the Schaumburg brewpub.
Coupled with White H'ops, this is a dual exploration of different hop-delivering styles. Something like that, anyway... It pours a very dark black-brown topped by a finger or so of glowing off-white foam. The nose comprises roasted malts, light cocoa powder, and a twinge of earthy greens way in the back. In all honesty, it was hard to tell this beer was well-hopped at all from the smell, but the roast smelled pretty good to me. The taste brings in more of the same, though now the greens are a bit more prominent, especially when paired with their accompanying light pine character. Still, though the hops are more assertive here, they hardly compete with the roast. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, for the style, this is a decent-to-mediocre CDA. Taken as just a "hoppy dark beer", though, it's really not that bad.
