I had this on-tap in an imperial pint glass at the Lake City Way brewery.

Appearance: golden hue with a tiny touch of haze and a strong effervescence. Head is a finger of creamy white foam with decent retention.

Smell: lightly grainy aroma with bit much in the way of hops. It's OK, but not notably flawed.

Taste: very grainy malt flavor. There also seems to be a tiny touch of corn in there, but that could just be a side effect of all the graininess. Not bad, but it's a bit one-note.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a decent carbonation and more of a rocky refreshment than any creaminess. Still pretty good!

Overall: quite drinkable, possibly due to the dryish graininess and rocky carbonation.

Consumed on-tap at Maple Leaf Bar and Grill, on 4/25/09.

Incredibly average golden pour with minimal white head. Smells like light hops and malt, with little to distinguish it from any other blonde. Taste is surprisingly good, with a pang of bitter hitting the palette late, and light floral aftertaste. Its an incredibly smooth drink, that goes down well. While not my favorite beer, its low ABV and refreshing nature might lead me to start getting growlers of this after work during the summer. Fantastic light ale.

I don't usually care for beers of this sort. But for some reason, this beer on this occasion seemed to work for me, thanks in part to its delayed smack of sharp bittering. As its name and style designation suggest, Pilot Light is Elliott Bay's lightest offering. This holds true in the sense of its polished goldenrod color and absent late-hop flavor, though the beer does venture soundly into the realm of funky yeast-tang which has a tendency to warp the finish.

But again, I'm finding some appeal here where I don't otherwise. And it's not from a clean finish, for Pilot provides none of this. It has a meaty, yeasted aroma and a slight touch of malt sweetness. Yet taken together, the whole of it somehow works sufficiently well.
