Notes: Our lightest beer, this is a popular brew in rural Iowa. Malted wheat is carefully blended wtih the traditional malted barley, and brewed with special hops to create a "Summer Fest" beer.

Pours a straw yellow color, cloudy with a lot of carbonation. Forms a very large white head.

Smell is very bread like, malt and yeast dominate. Wheat and a slight pepper aroma as well.

Not surprisingly, wheat is very much up front in the flavor. Bit of malt and yeast in there, and a hint of citrus. Finishes with just a slight hint of pepper.

Feel is about average, you really notice the carbonation as you drink it.

A decent beer, but nothing really stands out. No major flaws, just an easy drinking beer. It may not be too complex, but has enough flavor to make it worth trying.

Bottle into weizen

Off white fading two finger head

Smells like grains, bread, and bananas

Tastes like grains, hops, honey, and sweet sugar fluff at the finish

Mouthfeel: Fluffy and chewy

Overall, I don't understand why this ale is advertised as a lager. I can't wait to try more of this brewery's offering, but I don't understand why it is said to be lagered.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a shaker pint glass.

A: Slightly hazy, pale golden color with less than one finger of white foam head. No lacing remains on the glass and large solitary bubbles occasionally rise in the column while more bubbles gather on the floor of the glass.

S: Unmalted wheat grain is doughy, with some weak mixed citrus also detectable. Other yeasty fruit is mild, but too apparent for the smell to really be described as clean.

T: Begins off-dry, with refined bready grain that is soon overwhelmed by juicy orange citrus. Acidity is pronounced but appropriate, considering the other prominent citrus quality. Existing flavors relax during the middle while some honey and a fine thread of herbaceous hops are noted for the first time. The finish is short and clean, but still bready, with minimal bitterness.

M: Medium viscosity, cleansing on the palate, with aggressive carbonation.

D/O: This beer is intended to not offend, and that is about all it is good at. It is a typical representative of its style--it tries nothing new or interesting, and succeeds at it. As a thirst-quencher it could even be more effective if the texture was somewhat thinner and smoother.

This is just a good average, wheat beer. It reminded me a little bit of Leinie's Honeyweiss (for you locals). There wasn't much to distinguish it from your standard macro brewery summertime beer. (and I now include Leinies in that mix). That said, if you are looking to support a craft brewery and want something that will go down easy if you are looking at a long night of drinking, this would work. There isn't anything great I can say about this beer but I can't criticize it either if you just take it for what it is; a soild easy drinking wheat beer.

had a hazy golden color, which is typical for a wheat. the smell had the smell of wheat, but was lacking the citrus smell thats comes with a wheat. same goes for the taste. the wheat can be tasted, but none in regards to the citrus notes that come with this style. the mouthfeel i that was average. i'll occasionally come back to this beer when i'm wanting a straight wheat brew without the citrus notes.

Bottle purchased at Hyvee in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Poured into a weizen glass.

Head is composed of fairly fine, white bubbles, creating a solid 3-4cm of fluff. This dissipates over a few minutes to a fine coating, maybe 0.25cm on top of the body. No lacing. Body is a cloudy, goldenrod yellow, no visible carbonation, but something has to be supporting the head, so...

Aroma is of lemon, corn syrup-like sweetness (think from a grapefruit-flavored soda), yeast, and sweat, with the most detectable at the forefront of the list. For the style, this is pretty decent.

Taste opens with wheat malt, coriander, and lemon citrus flavors. Transitions to a sweet coriander general flavor. Finishes similarly. Aftertaste is a bit bready, of 50% white/50% wheat bread flavor.

Medium-bodied, with more than adequate carbonation. Finish is dry, but in a sticky-sweet sort of way that isn't particularly pleasant.

This is a somewhat above-average APWA. The style isn't very complex, but this beer does a few interesting things. It ends up being a bit too sweet, though.

A big shout out to cpolking for sending this beer. Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a cloudy golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of grains, a touch of lemon. Taste is the same, wheat, some tart lemons, easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

Poured a cloudy golden yellow color with a bit of tight white head.

Smell is yeast, malt and wheat.

Taste is pretty light. Not bad but not a lot of flavor to this one. Some wheat taste.

Mouthfeel is light. Lots if carbonation in this one. Very bubbly.

Overall an ok beer but nothin special. I would drink it again but probably wouldn't buy it.

A: Bright white head, 3-4 fingers, on top of a kind of unattractive yellow beer. Not much active carbonation and a slight haze.

S: Not much aroma, and definitely not a complex one. A cross between an American Adjunct Lager and an American Pale Wheat if you ask me.

T: The taste follows through with the aroma. Not much complexity, some yeastiness, some graininess. It's definitely a thin taste.

M: Good and refreshing, but not quite right and not something that's calling me back..

D: Pretty good, especially as a beer that could pull some BMC drinkers into craft

A - Hazy, light golden color. Average sized, foamy, light, white head. Disappears right away with no lace left.

S - Pretty weak. Some spicy wheat aroma with a touch of lemon. A bit of a wheat cracker aroma. Nothing outstanding.

T - Similar to the nose with lightly toasted wheat cracker flavors being the strongest. Some spice and lemon/citrus zest also present. A touch of grassy hops and yeast. Overall fairly sweet. Faintest hint of banana.

M - Lighter side of medium body with just below average carbonation. Slick and smooth feel.

D - Fairly easy to drink beer with typical wheaty flavors. Not overly strong, or interesting but pretty easy to drink.

Notes: Average wheat beer, nothing outstanding nor are the flavors all that strong (even for the style). Slick mouthfeel. Decent beer but nothing inspiring.

I also have to thank Drhinehart for this beer.

I don't know if this is the right category for this beer, my label informs me that this is a lager and not an ale.

The beer poured a hazy golden color with a head that dissipates rather quickly, no lacing to report. The nose is rather lacking, I am getting a lager yeast note, grainy and a very faint whiff of lemon. The taste is zesty, crisp, lots of carbonation and some grains, not to much wheat flavor. A nice beer that would be enjoyable on a hot summer day.

Poured from 12oz beer. Many thanks to drhinehart for this one!

A- Pours a hazed golden yellow color. One finger white head comes and goes rather quickly. No real lacing on the glass just some light ringing action.

S- Grainy smells which kind of throw me off a little. No real wheaty aroma to say at all. Some light lemon zest at first which turns into a ton of lemon zest in the nose as it warms.

T- Interesting taste I would say. Big fruity taste upfront almost artifical tasting with the lemony upfront. Light grainy taste with some light wheaty notes here and there. Very sweet tasting all over.

M- Light mouthfeel. Carbonation is a little hight for my liking for the style. Lemony tastes through and through from palate to aftertaste.

D- This is a very drinkable beer. The flavor profile is not a favorite of mine although I could drink it if I had it in the fridge. Good summer beer and like usual I am glad to have had the chance to have had it.

Thanks to Nick G. for the Iowa beer hook-up!

Pours a pale hay mixed with copper plus a soft haze. retty quick had and some moderate bubbling.

The aroma was a little corny, but sweetened up a little by the wheat. The wheat giving off aromas
of wheat bread and very faint Spring fruits.

The taste starts off crips and grainy. The taste quickly moves to adjuncty and stale. Some grains and faint prairie grass hops. But I can't get over the staleness of this beer.

Grainy but stale palate. With som off flavors that linger longer than appreciated.

Pours a cloudy pale yellow color, nice carbonation, nice little fizzy white head, with some sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, with some yeast notes, slight spice, grassy. The nose is slightly sweet, malty, yeasty, nice little spice note, and grassy. Medium body. Drinkable, this would be a good one for a hot day.

Smell: A little wheat, seltzer.

Taste: Light wheat flavor, kind of grainy. Not particularly sweet but not bitter either.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: Not heavy, could be a decent lawnmower beer.

Picked up a sampler pack of Millstream beers, the Windmill Wheat is a decent beer but nothing too special. Could be a decent change of pace from BMC in summer months.

A - Lightly hazed golden color. Thin white head quickly fades to nothing more than a very thin ring around the glass. Very active carbonation quickly rising to the top.

S - Grainy and somewhat fruity. Hints of lemon zest and alot of grain. Not much else going on. Not much on the way of wheaty aromas.

T - Very fruity, but somewhat artificial. Hints of lemon, orange and maybe even a touch of strawberry candy. Not much wheat in the taste at all but it is present.

M/D - Medium bodied and very crisp. Not much 'wheatiness' in the feel. Appears to be filtered. Easy drinking.

Pours a hazy, golden color. 1/3 inch head of a white color. Decent retention and decent lacing. Smells of yeast, pale malt, slight hops, slight wheat, and slight citrus. Fits the style of an American Pale Wheat Ale. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp with an average carbonation level. Tastes of pale malt, yeast, hops, slight wheat, and hints of citrus. Overall, the high carbonation level lowers the drinkability. Still a light and refreshing beer though it lacks complexity and a real good body.

12 oz brown bottle, label as pictured above, part of a mixed case from Amana.
Description from their website: "Our lightest beer, this is a popular brew in rural Iowa. Malted wheat is carefully blended with the traditional malted barley, and brewed with special hops to create a "Summer Fest" beer. Light and zesty in itself, the beer is served in a tall glass with a slice of lemon."

Pour yellow gold color, quite clear (clearer than expected), small white head. Not much retention or lace. Light wheat aroma with a bit of wet grass and some yeast.
Light flavor, slightly yeasty and a hint of wheat. Mouthfeel is light, but it is supposed to be light and refreshing, easy to drink. Not alot of big flavors, makes it thirst quenching. I found it comparable, maybe slightly better, than Big Rock Grasshopper.

A- Pours a pale yellowish gold color with a thin white head. Head goes to a layer of bubbles and leaves pretty much no lacing.

S- Smells of yeast, wheat, maybe a touch of honey and lemons.

T- Taste of yeast, lemon citrus, and a touch of wheat. Not a whole lot going on at all.

M- Light in body and a ton of carbonation.

D- Easy to drink because there isn't much going on. Seemed very watery and I won't be out looking for this one.

Appearance: Pours a hazy pale golden color with a rocky white head that leaves a few dots here and there

Smell: A little bready with the vaguest hint of lemon

Taste: Bready and bland, with the hint of lemon coming on and a slightly sweet finish, which I suspect makes it popular in some parts

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate to high carbonation

Drinkability: Not particularly flavorful, but I wasn't expecting much from an American Wheat; a good quencher on a hot day, I guess, as it is pretty inoffensive

Thanks, BuckeyeNation, for the opportunity

Thanks to Metalmonk for going out of his way to get me this brew so I could cross Iowa off my list of states.

A: Pours a murky peach color with a small off white head. Tons of fizz, but no lace.

S: Very faint in the nose. Light wheat aromas with hints of wet hay and yeast.

T: Light in the flavor department as well. Mostly yeast comes thu with a hint of wheat. A bit too watery.

M: Fairly think and watery. Lots of carbonation though.

D: If it was your cup of tea you could drink it until the cows come home.

12 oz bottle marked with August of year unknown.

A - Pours a brilliant light golden hue. The head is quick and strong but dissipates to a very small film.

S - Smell is almost imperceptible to me. The best I can derive from the nose is a light yeasty background

T - Starts pretty flat with very little flavor but water. it moves to a nice balance of grainy astringency and yeast notes. Finishes with a fairly nice sweet and spicy combination.

M - Fairly thick body for a wheat beer. Feels like it has a fair amount of unfermentables in there along with the somewhat potent carbonation.

D - Very easy to drink - abv is manageable and flavor is not too dominating. My only downside here is the carbonation tends to make me a bit full feeling.

Decent beer from the home state. However, one silly question - how is this classified as a American Wheat if it is lagered. It says its a lager on the label, so this may be slightly stylistically misclassified.

A - A slightly hazy apricot brew is topped with a grayish one finger head that eventually settles to an anemic collar. A quick swirl brings the head back to a finger, but I can't for the life of me get any lace to stick to the glass.

S - Ah, this redeems itself a bit with the weak, but vanilla infused nose. Butterscotch and vanilla are not what I was expecting to smell in a wheat beer. Not really complex, but pleasant.

T - This starts out slightly tangy and spicy, but then immediately falls flat on it's face. Half a second after sipping, the already weak flavor disappears and all thats left is essentially water in my mouth. Wow. This is really poor beer.

M - Super-thin and flavorless with a flimsy carbonation that seems raspy like soda, but then effervesces like Alkaseltzer water. This is thinner than most BMC lagers, and the finish is nonexistent.

D - This stuff is a horrible example not only of the style, but of beer in general.
