Apparently this is only brewed once every six years.

A slightly muddy caramel color with some visible transparency. Head is a small ring of 1/2 finger.

Aroma of smoked malts, hot caramel, and plum. The smoked malts are quite strong, akin to smelling a bag of smokey crushed grain.

Flavor starts out with a nice balance of caramel and peat, with hints of grape. Lingering smoked malt, hop bitterness, and dark fruits remain on the finish.

Feel is medium bodied and semi-creamy. A hint of alcohol heat, and semi dry finish.

Overall, it's a decent Barleywine but the smoked malts throw off the balance of sweet/bitter a bit, but hey we knew what we were getting into, right?

Aged two years has done amazingly. Smoke beautifully compliments the sweetness of the malt. Almost more of a fruity sweetness than a caramel or toffee.

It looks like this beer was subpar at its release but time did wonders to it.

Appearance: Red, good head, but chunks of yeast aren't very appealing.

Smell: Nice, sweet, smoky, cured meats.

Taste: Moderate caramel sweetness with a fair amount of smoke. A bit of fruitiness--grapes. Moderately smoky finish.

Overall: I wasn't sure who this was brewed by until I saw Amana, IA. I like rauchbiers and I really like barleywines so I picked up a 4 pack. It's an interesting beer, the smoke is prominent but not too heavy, and there's the BW sweetness in the background. The grape notes could have pushed this too far into boozy malt liquor off flavor territory, but stayed in check. Worth a shot.

Wow this is pretty unique, and surprisingly really good. Dark brownish-red with very little head. Smell is almost all smoke; smells like a very peaty scotch. Taste is dominated by smoke, not necessarily in a bad way, but there is also a decent malt backbone. At first I was able to detect a little hop presence, but soon the smoke overtook it. I suspect the base of this beer (without the smoke) would make an awesome american barleywine. Overall I really enjoyed this. If I didn't know better, I would have thought this aged in a scotch barrel.

If you enjoy peaty scotch, I highly recommend trying this.
