This beer sits a lightly hazy, brownish red color, it is quite dark and is topped by a wispy tan colored head the rings the glass. Wow, the aroma is quite concentrated; notes of sweet malt, cherries, a bit of rum from the mix of alcohol and fruity character, something that reminds me of malt extract, and some concentrated raisin notes.
The taste is sweet up front and finishes with a toasted malt note as well as a touch of roast character. There is a raisin note that is quite prominent, in fact when you throw in the alcohol it tastes a bit like rum soaked raisins. The beer has a thickish full palate that just about coats the mouth as you drink it. There is a certain light herbal note her in the finish, but I can't quite put my finger on it (is it hop derived or is it something else?). Notes of toasted malt and alcohol linger on in the long finish of this beer.
This is definitely a Wee Heavy, but there is something that seems a bit off with this beer. Overall it is quite good, perhaps a bit too sweet, which reminds me of malt extract, but that is perfectly within style. Perhaps it is that herbal, maybe vegetal note, I can't quite say, but something is keeping me from thinking that this beer is outstanding.
