Poured from a half-litre bottle into a glass at the Ardbeg distillery.
A: Bronze. Little head. Clear and pretty.
S: Very little. Fruity and malty.
T: Goodish. Malty-sweet with some red fruits. Lightly drying aftertaste and perhaps even slight smoke (though that could conceivably be an after-effect of some Ardbeg).
M: A little carbonation and drying hoppiness. My notes conclude: "There-ish." Hmm. Presumably this means full-bodied.
O: A good beer, but not great. Stick to whisky if you're here.
Notes: "The use of pale and crystal malts and un-malted roasted barley gives a darker, reddish brown hue and adds a softer, nuttier flavour to Black Rock. It also has a full body. Golding is used as the bittering hop. Late hopping with Fuggle and Mount Hood gives a floral, grassy and herbal nose."

Beer bottle (50cl), tasted in 2006.
Appearance : brown color, with tan foam head
Smell : malty, chocolate nose
Taste and mouthfeel : dry and bitter. The fruity and malty notes balance the hop bitterness. Aftertaste is quite bitter, with some of the malty complexity.
Drinkability : a good beer in the English bitter style

Very surprised to find this beer in a yakitori joint in Osaka, Japan. Set me back $10 bucks for 1 bottle!!!!
A - Beautiful saffron in amber colored transperent body. How can this be so transparent and yet bottle conditioned? Small white head with stubborn lacing.
S - Nice pine and grapefruit aroma. Slight malty aroma.
T - Very watery maltyness, light bitterness. Lots of wood flavors.
M - Very mild carbonation, watery.
D - I would find it very easy to knock back a half dozen of these beers.
