500ml bottle poured into a tulip. This was brewed in 2008, not sure if it will be brewed again. Only 10,000 bottles made and this one is signed by the brewer (and purchased from his wife).
A = Color is dark golden honey with light off white foamy, fluffy head, good retention, heavy lacing, liquid is not very clear, more translucent with a fair amount of floaties.
S = Peat, peat and more peat are the first 3 things noticed in the smell. Wet overturned dirt, sharp concentrated lemon juice smells, unbaked sourdough bread. This really smells unlike anything I've had before. Perhaps the closest thing would be a Scotch barrel aged strong ale, but even then the freshness of the peat is not quite like this. There is a strong smokey quality to it, a lot like a straight Islay scotch.
T = Sadly, the taste falls a little short of the smell, but is still distinctive and worth a try. The smoky, peaty tastes hit right up front but a strong bitter, sour citrus flavor show up by mid-palate and continues into a long smoky, bitter, dry finish. The problem is that along with the peat flavor there is a plastic taste that hits up front and does not really ever disappear, though it does get better once the bitterness and flavors of the hops arrive. All in all decent, but would be better with a stronger, sweeter malt flavor to help replace the unpleasant flavor.
M = Medium bodied, but oddly thin right before mid-palate, good mouthcoating, but also nice and dry, good carbonation level.
D = Boy, this is a hard one. It really depends, I could see enjoying this again, but it is not an everyday beer and one at a time is probably sufficient.
