Served at the brewpub in a plain glass mug, it comes out cola brown under a two finger beige head with good retention and nice lacing. The nose smells of caramel and currant - a bit surprising but it grows on you. The mouth is light and fairly prickly. The dominant taste is currant: fruity, slightly dry, bitter. Sweet caramel adds some balance, but not much. The bitterness is not hoppy, in fact there is little hops presence at all, but definitely fruity. Fruit is the impression that lasts into the aftertaste. Perhaps they were shooting for something Belgian, but I suspect that gives the brewer more credit than he deserves. Still, an interesting brew. I liked it enough to have - ahem - a few...
