Pours a very pretty deep, dark red, with a nice head.

Smells kind of strange, a little funky...somewhere in between big toffee malts and dirty socks. Tastes much more the like former, fortunately. Creamy toffee malt that disolves into a strong, buttery diactyl. Pretty good, but not very complex.

Nice body and it goes down smooth.

Had on-tap @ Beck's Brewpub in Waterloo, IA. Paired with a simple (but damn good) "Beckster Burger".

*Edit*- All of their beer (Red Dragon in particular) varies in quality it seems. The first time I had it, it was excellent, the second, not nearly as good. But I was there last week and it was nearly as good as the first time. There were more than subtle differences, so I don't know if it was just old or different batches. Either way, my review of this beer is still the initial review, subject to change based on further tastings..

Appearance: Deep reddish-copper color. Most Red Ales I've had typically don't have much for a head..but this one is an exception. This beer had a frothy beige head that leaves a nice sheeted lacing on the glass.

Smell: Clean aroma of sweet, toasted malts..smells of buttery caramel and a twist of crisp hops as well.

Taste: Roasted, bready malts dominate this brew. Sweet caramel/toffee malts mixed with a bittersweet, almost fruity taste that I haven't picked up from any other beers I've had before. Earthy, resiny hop flavors come out in the finish as well.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel..slides down easy.. Not much as far as carbonation goes.

Drinkability: I could imagine this being a decent session red ale if it were bottled. Simple yet with enough complexity to enjoy and savor.
