I went to Kelly's because it was the only micro brewery on Key West. A very beautiful bar/restaurant with a nice setting.
The IPA is not among the best IPA's i've had but it's definitely got IPA character, rather than many "missed" IPAs which end up tasting like Pale Ales. Good Golden color, great hop aroma, good carbonation, good beer in general.

Consumed on 12/24/2015.
Not sure how to rate this objectively, since the name states it's a golden ale, but it's categorized as an American IPA. Either way, it's mediocre at best, and very bland.

The beer pours a dark golden color with a thin white head that fades to spotty lacing; little head retention. The aroma is good. It has a nice pale and Carapils malt scent along with a mild hop aroma. The taste is decent. It's well balanced and easy drinking. The malt bill is simple yet adequate. It has a good pale malt flavor with some Carapils malts for mouthfeel. The hop flavor is good. It's mildly bitter with good flavor. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium/full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a pretty good IPA. It's labeled a golden ale and it tastes more like an APA.

Pours a clean yellow color, with a white head. In the aroma, a sweet malt and quite mellow and not much more than kind of thin ale smell. In the taste, sweet malt and a bit watery. A smooth and thin bodied mouthfeel, with a dry malt aftertaste. Quite watery, and made for the masses, eh.

Served in a pint glass at Kelly's 5/17/10.
Listed on the chalkboard above the bar as an IPA w/Cascade hops.
A: Served a clear and rich golden color. A smallish, bright white head formed on top and left a little bit of sticky lace clinging to the glass.
S: Nose was pretty much just soapy/perfumed hops and a touch of toasty malt. Not terrible in the least, just lacking in the "Cascade-y department".
T: Soap and aspirin. Finally the pine and citrus switch was thrown and this woke up.
M: A little too on the thin side for an IPA (more like a straight up Pale Ale) but with a lingering dry bitterness that proved that there were hops in there.
D: Refreshing to say the least. Glad we were able to sample ALL of the beer brewed in the Keys in one sitting.

Don't recall it being referred to as "Golden Ale" - it was actually more of an amber-orange topped by a thin off-white head and served in a chalice/goblet-style glass. Aroma was well balanced between piney/earthy hops and malt aromas. Flavor was also very well balanced - very bitter up front and the softened by some nice malt complexity. A little dry and bitter on the finish. Mouthfeel was good - perfect carbonation in my opinion. That helped the drinkablity. The bitterness did not get tiring and the taste buds didn't seem numb after enjoying this one either. A nice solid IPA that is probably more British and American in interpretation.

Reviewed 6/16/2008 (Draft @ Kelly's, Key West, FL):
Pours a reddish brownish colored body, with a smallish whitish colored head, lasting. Not very goldeny looking. Malty, hoppy aroma. Hoppy grapefruity taste, malty. Some nutiness. Somewhat bitter finish. A little unbalanced.

I had this beer at Kelly's while on vacation last weekend. From my notes:
A= This ale poured a cloudy golden amber color with a 1/2" white head. The head dropped slowly leaving a few decent streaks of lace on my glass.
S= The dominant aroma of this beer is definitely the citrus hop notes. Some faintly sweet biscuity malt shines through, but the hops are in front. Nothing is really over the top though.
T= Much the same as the aroma. Appropriately hopped but slightly under-malty. Finish was decently dry.
MF= This was a medium bodied ale with a crisp carbonation feel.
D= Not the best IPA in the world, but certainly the best IPA on Key West when I was there. Very sessionable.
