Firkin tapped at the Round Table in Oxford, MS. Served in a Lazy Magnolia "old school" shaker. Great reps, great people, great time!
A: Pours very dark brown and appears completely black in a dimly lit bar, with no light penetrating. Very small half finger tan head dissipates quickly only to leave a thin ring that remains throughout most of the glass. Minimal lacing.
S: Peaches and sweet, subtly floral, tea are dominant. I expected a bit more peach, considering the description, but was pleasantly surprised by the balance ... smelled like peach tea was steeped perfectly into the Jefferson Stout. Just a tiny hint of cinnamon and chocolate without any suggestion of alcohol.
T: Much like the smell, sweet peaches and tea right at the fore. Not overly sweet, which complements the base beer quite well. The taste is a little more complex as there is a subtle smokiness and bittersweet chocolate present. The cinnamon sneaks in at the finish, evident mostly in the throat, which provides a nice warming sensation that is accompanied by just a bit of booze. Overall a nice balance that is much better than the base beer by itself.
M: Medium body with very low carbonation (too low). I'd love to see some more bubbles in this to make the mouthfeel a little more velvety and help pronounce some of its nuances. Again a bit of cinnamon biting at the throat, which is nice. Great finish that has no drying effect and leaves the palate well prepared for the next sip.
D: Very drinkable, aside from the lack of carbonation. The first two pints went down very easily, but I struggled with the third and it settled a little heavy (had nothing to do with the alcohol content). Again, I'd love to see the carbonation level lifted a bit, but as it is, I think it holds its own and is certainly worth seeking out if they make it again. If they'd bottle it, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Well done Lazy Mag, and thanks for the great tasting!
