Served on cask at the J.Clyde celebrating the J.Clyde's fourth anniversary. The beer is caramel-colored with cherry-red highlights--a hint of things to come. No head and minimal carbonation as this was pulled from a cask.
Being familiar with Southern Pecan, one of my favorite local brews, I was a bit surprised by the flavor. While I could smell the old Southern Pecan--roasted grains and pecans--I could only taste brown sugar and more brown sugar on the front end. It was so caramelly sweet, I kept thinking that surely something besides cherries, raisins, and vanilla had to have been added. As I continued to contemplate the glass, I started tasting the vanilla on the back end. And finally, towards the end of my glass, I could distinctly pick up cherry flavors on the front end. Not sure where the raisins fit in--maybe they just added to the sweetness. The last time a beer tasted like liquid brown sugar to me was when I had a Utopias! We had sweet potato fries with our dinner, dusted with brown sugar, and when I popped one in my mouth, I thought, "This tastes just like my beer." Crazy. Despite being so sweet, the low abv kept it from being cloying. My wife ordered another. I opted for something else. All in all, a tasty beer, even though it pushed to the edge of my sweetness threshold.
