In full celebration of the FCC season kick off, the brewers at Christian Moerlein commemorate the occasion by scaling up their popular Blood Orange IPA to imperial status.
The larger than life beer pours a golden amber color, easily reading actual orange into its hue. A foamy white cap crowns the beer while its perfumy scent is succulent, citrusy and radiant with the fragrance of branch ripe oranges. Caramel and honey align on the tongue and begin to allow the senses to read actual orange juicy with those simple fructose sweetnesses.
As the malty sweetness lifts, the remnants of malt reman and form a hint of graham cracker and granola. Quickly dwarfed with the emboldened character of blood orange, the malts become less and less a part of the flavor profile. Tangy, juicy and brightly bitter, the copious orange additions layer over top of the hop display underneath as their own grapefruit, orange and tropical fruit flavors slowly take command.
Full, bright and creamy on the palate, the beer develops into a semidry finish with hints of sweetness and nuttiness remaining. But the star of the show is the candied orange flavor that plays out like sherbet on the tongue. Light alcohol spice tucks nicely behind the hop bitterness en route to a long and bitter finish with hints of curacao liquor and furniture polish in waves of aftertaste.
