I got this off the single shelf at a Kroger just down the road from south metro ice in Dayton. It poured a clear deep amber with no head and no lace. The scent had holiday spices. the taste was Christmas tree leaning. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall it was an ok beer.

When the pending winter weather approaches, its off to the stores we go in search of milk, bread and toilet paper. But in the Ohio Valley, no grocery list is complete until it has a good stiff beer to weather the storm. Christian Moerlein delivers the goods with a spiced winter warmer with Scottish undertones.

Deep and honey amber in color, the rusty hazy ale crowns with a rich light sepia stained froth. Rich aromas of honey, toast, citrus, Christmas spices and marzipan. Equally rich on the palate, the malty sweet upstart is rounded with toffee, brown sugar, light honey and toast.

As the beer's malt sweetness glides across the middle palate and gives a softness to the spices, gentle hops and toasty alcohol. The lightness of campfire, stone fruit and toasted almond play a medium roll and gives a modest grouping of complexity to the persistent honey and cola flavor. Mild pepper notes rise late as a citrusy curracao liquor not links up with a slight tobacco and grape depth of taste.

Full bodied but remarkably easy to drink, the ale satisfies the culinary artist in all of us without becoming overly one dimensional or simplistic. A long finish of nutty sweetness and mild spice leads to an aftertaste of nutmeg and orange peel; perfectly suited for the fireplace and a long book.
