An imperial pint, poured on-tap at Roots in Portland, OR.
A: Foggy auburn red, like resin. Virtually no head (white there is is a faint white froth) and only a polka-dot pattern of lace.
S: Malty and faintly sweet...a bit like powdered cocoa and a bit like rich, chocolate Ovaltine....hmmm...very grainy.
T: Upfront smoky malt, followed by creamy chocolate with a faint oxidation. Dusty grain husks and a vaguely root-like bitterness follow. Vegetal, with a hint of yeast. Meh, as a fellow bar patron reminded me, Belgian ales are allowed time to age before serving. Roots' version is very young, but I think it'll take alot of aging before this becomes very good.
M: Clean, easy-flowing and with a medium body. Substantial towards the front but watery in the finish. Some faint bittering and a bit of graininess on the back of the tongue.
D: I wish this had been better. Fails in comparison to the better Belgians of the style: lacking in maltiness, body and character for this style. A good try, but doesn't live up to other "abbey"-styled ales, Belgian or otherwise, I've enjoyed. Probably won't revisit...
